Tank hoods?

Hi I have an arcadia light hood, and as it doesnt seal the top i have to use 1 of those plastic horrible things Anyway is it real important to use one of those or could you just have the top of the tank uncovered Its not a high water level so i dont think the fish could jump out! Just would it be affected by dust etc etc?

Would there be anything between the light and the water?

The water would evaporate faster. If you use any cleaning products, purfumes, spray air freshners ........ It would have much more of a chance of getting in your water.

People do have uncovered tanks tho a lot of it I suppose depends on what kind of fish you are keeping.

ahh ok well I think i will just by a wooden hood but do you have to fit the lights in yourself? If so is it hard work and expensive?
