or since your parents have a mature setup, transfer them to that one for a while, as kj said, it will be alot easier on everyone

With parents who have an established tank, you are in an enviable postion of knowing someone who can give you some filter media with the right bacteria already in it to get your cycle started. Take a good sized sample of established filter media and put it into your filter and you will be surprised how quickly your cycle finishes.
