Table Bang, Tank Bang, Water And Gravel Everywhere.

I'm terrified of that too. The stand I got, I feel a bit of a crack in the wood toward the bottom. I know it supports the tank though as the guy had it filled when I bought it. Not sure how to feel about it though.

On no...I have nightmares along the lines of this!

I almost went through a similar situation, though. A few years back I purchased - on impulse - another tank. It was just a 2ft tank. Got it home and realised it was too tall to fit on the bottom section of the double-tier stand I have. Didn't have a spare stand so decided to use the old wooden tea trolley I inherited from an aunt! That will do till I buy a proper stand, I thought.

So that's where I put it (without even considering the weight of it all once full with water!) but I never got around to buying another stand as the tea trolley was quite handy for storing fish stuff underneath. Thought no more about it until I came to moving home recently and had to close the tanks down. That is when I got a huge shock. Emptied the tank, lifted it up off the trolley and OMG the wood underneath it had split right across from one side to the other. I have no idea what stopped it from completely giving way...

Was a stupid thing to do, I know - but it's a lesson learned. When my boyfriend made me a built-in stand for my new 4ft tank to sit on, I made sure it was thoroughly reinforced and had proper brace support etc - he says an elephant could sit on it, it's that sturdy!

That's all very well, but the trouble is, I don't think I can fit an elephant through the front door LOL :hyper:

Glad you were lucky.
It would have been far worse if there was fish in it like in your situation.

Quick question, I'm impatient, impatience and silicone drying time doesn't work well.
Am I really supposed to wait 48 hours for it to dry out?

Well, I would say it's best to wait...otherwise if it hasn't set properly and you fill the tank with water, you could have another disaster on your hands if the panel of glass bursts off...and you don't want to risk that happening do you?

The full 48 hours like it suggests? I done it yesterday at 11am. I suppose its not much longer to wait really. Its just that I have 9 more YBS's coming today.

Oh dear, bad time to be ordering more fish LOL

Have you made the new stand yet?

It's up to you, obviously, if you want to chance filling a tank before the recommended 48hrs drying out time but I would be way too nervous. If your tank seams are not strong enough, then the pressure of the water could easily cause the glass to give way...

Not fish, turtles. Yellow bellied sliders. I was at a LFS yesterday and a woman was going to hoof them in the bin as the pet shop had no room for them. Have other tanks set up for them and will rehome them when I can.

LOL, I wondered what YBS stood for - thought it was some kind of fish - Ooopsie!

Wow, just googled them and they are gorgeous turtles!

There's one in particular that has a lovely red tinge to her shell.
Hoping to rehome 5.

Are they easy enough to rehome? Can't believe that woman was going to throw them in the bin! How cruel eh? Glad you were there to rescue them. Just means you'll have the task of finding new homes for them. Are they all juvies or fully grown?

Never seen turtles at my LFS. Are you in the UK?

I think the proper name is a terrapin, I'm not 100% sure on them.
I had one when I was a child and he stayed about 3 inches all his life (wasn't aware of filter, heater, lights so he didn't grow which I now admit was terrible way to keep him. I was only around 7 though and my parents weren't interested in him.
I have a few friends who want one, they've wanted one for years but found it hard to get a bigger one so hopefully I'll be able to find forever homes for them.
I'm in Northern Ireland, a lot of LFS's round here seem to have the wee baby ones but these ones are fully grown.

Ooooh yes...years ago those little terrapins (about the size of a 50p coin) were popular with children. My little brother (he was about 8yrs old) had a couple of those but they didn't live too long (not surprising the way he used to keep taking them out of the tank to play with them). I've not seen them for sale in years. Never even realised that those little things could grow so big either - wow, I just thought they were dwarf versions LOL.

Well, you live and learn, as they say!
