T5 Lighting

hi all,

i am looking to change my lighting to hagen glo t5 lighting as my current led lighting is no good as i can seam to get plants to survive.

my tank is 3 ft 120lt and i am looking at either the twin 24w or twin 39w set up.

can i ask for which to go for and which colour tubes to go for please.

What plants are you trying to grow? Do you have a substrate with nutrients? Are you dosing fertilizers?

hi,

not sure what plants but i tried various different plants.i used jbl kugeln ball under roots in very very fine gravel and jbl ferropol liquid fertilizer.

i have also found lfs
are also selling plants
that are not true aquatic
plants and only last for
a few weeks before they start to break
down

either would be fine for most plants but if you go for the 39w you'll have over 3wpg which means without considerable plant growth you will get algae problems, nutrients alone won't solve this, you will need co2 to sustain healthy growth and limit algae. The Arcadia plant pro tubes have always worked well for me.

I don't see the problem with this as long as people are told when buying them, with the exception of a few hardy species most of the non aquatic plants would last longer in a low tech, no ferts, no co2 tank anyway, species like dracaena, ophiopogon and selaginella can last for months when fully submerged.

what does the 3wpg figure mean that you gave?

i have just ordered the twin 39w glo set up and although confused as to which tubes to use i seam to be drawn to jbl as there website was fairly clear on using 1x solar natur 9000k and 1 x solar tropic 4000k.

how does this sound? hopefuly not to bright?

I'm sure that will be fine, focus more on the emphasis of the colour spectrum and aim for tubes that focus on the red and blue ends of it as most plants prefer this. wpg stands for Watts Per Gallon.

a work friend who has been into fish keeping for years,mainly marine swears by arcardia t5 tubes.i have looked today and found that tropical pro and plant pro seam ok and cheaper than jbl so tommorrow it is as my glo starter should arrive next couple of days so lets see what happens!!
