Swapping Filters?

I’ve recently upgraded tanks; however I transferred my smaller filter up to the bigger tank as the filter that came with the tank was a bit strong for my girls. I’ve bought them a slightly less powerful filter suitable for their tank size; however I plan on running the older filter and the new filter until the new filter is ‘cycled’. Just wondering how long I’d need to have both filters on the go?

I know I can’t get an exact answer; I’m just looking for an approximate answer.

can you transfer the media from your old filter to the new?

I can give it a good squeeze but the old sponge is too small for the new filter and I dont think it would fit in down the side .
