My mom just told me Sushi died while I was at school. She said she checked on him at around 10 and he was 'floating'. I only had him for about six months. :-( I think it was from a bacterial or fungal infection, he had all the syptoms of both. (But the syptoms posted on bettatalk.com were almost the same). I started treating him last night, but he didn't make it. I'm going to miss the little guy, I loved seeing him swimming up and down his tank when I woke up every morning.

RIP Sushi :byebye:

Sorry it's awful been there, R.I.P. little fishie.

Oh dear... I'm really sorry to hear this.
Little Sushi. :(
He had a good life with you, I'm sure.

Maybe you can go over and rescue one of the poor dears at the store with the floating candles now in his honor...

Thats what I think I"m going to do. (It will also be a good excuse to check up on the store). My mom says I'm setting myself up for another heartbreak, but I'd atleast like to try.

Just a question, how should I sanetize his tank? Especially his plant? (It's a Java Fern). I'll probably just throw the gravel away, it's not worth it to risk another sick fish.

Sorry to hear that, he had a really kick-butt name. I happen to think that names directly coinside with personality. So since his name was kick-butt, you fish must have been awesome. Cheers, and solute', to an awesome fishie. May he play forever in the rice paddies of heaven. :( :look:

EDIT: I wash everything in extreamly hot water and salt...usually kills any nasties.

If the tank is glass you can sanitize it this way:

Pour 20 parts of scalding hot water and one part clorox into the tank. Let it set for 20 minutes. Dump it out. Fill it back up again with just scalding hot water and about 4 X the amount of dechlor that you normally use. Let that sit for a while, maybe 10 mins or so - then dump it out. In the meantime, turn on your shower as hot as it will go. Set the tank into the shower and let it rinse, rinse, rinse for 15 - 20 minutes.

That's always how I do mine and never have had a problem.

Your mom is probably right about setting yourself up for heartbreak only because all fish have to die eventually. but... it seems like you take really good care of your fish and really care for them, so I think you should get one if you really feel like you want one.

In reality, we're all setup for betta heartbreaks. Eventually, each one of them will have to leave us. :( I have only gone through one betta loss. It was horrible, and I'm not looking forward to the next one, whenever that should happen. I have 14 more times to go through it just with the fish I have now.

I say go get one. He'd be much happier with you than in that crazy store.

Thank you BM, I'll probably sanitize the tank this weekend.

Sushi is still in his tank, I can't bear to take him out yet. I'll probably wait until my dad gets home and then we can bury him in the backyard.

Any ideas on sanitizing his plant?

The plant is real?
If so... just mix up a pretty highly salty solution of lukewarm water and aquarium salt. Dip it in there a few times - that's about the best you can or will need to do with it.

Say a few words for all of us for Sushi when you say goodbye to him.

His tank and plant have been sanitized. The tank has been set up again, but without gravel. I'm going to put the plant back once the temp. evens out.

My mom said she doesn't want to to get another betta too soon. I told her I was going to set up the tank just incase I see a betta in need of help. She said that would be fine.

It's so weird not seeing him swim up and down his tank. Just last night I was watching his tank while I was half asleep thinking 'Where is he? He normally does laps at around this time.' Not even realizing it I've been just walking past the tank, making sure the light is on, etc. like I have done every morning for the past 6 months for him. I miss the little guy so much.

I think I'm going to try my hand at rescueing a betta that needs it. My mom said I should get a betta from my friend who breeds them. (He breeds halfmoons.) I think I'm just going to see what betta might need my help.

RIP Sushi, you will be truly missed. :byebye:

Sorry to hear about the loss

We're all gonna have to face it at some point when the betta's go. 6 months is still great compared to how long I've had goldfish and tetras last in the past. I've had my betta for about 7 months now too...

From what I read, you plan to re-use a live plant. My understanding is that live plants cannot be properly disinfected and should be thrown away rather than re-used in a new aquarium. Whatever your betta had could easily reside on the live plant and infect the next inhabitant. If the plant is fake thats totally fine, just bleach and then rinse it like the rest of the equipment.

I disinfected it how BettaMomma said. I accidently put in a little too much salt and left it for too long....I've also been told to dip it in ice water to kill bacteria, would that work too?

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, it's hard to lose a fish (or any animal) that you love :-(
