Substrate

I've been having some trouble choosing the substrate for my 25 litre planted tank. i've seen tanks where people are using one type of substrate right at the bottom and another further up, this is realy confusing me. Any help and advice on what substarte to use will be much appreciated

These tanks that you have seen most probably had a plant based (fertiliser) substrate with a sand/gravel substrate on top, quite a lot of planted set-ups have it setup this way to help the plants out a lot giving them a good start in your aquarium. Not a huge expert with a planted tank so im sure someone can help you out

Malawi mad is correct. It is usually a soil based substrate which is high in nutrients for the plants. A lot of people cap it with sand or gravel in an attempt to keep the nutrients in for longer or to give the desired look as some of them can be ugly.
