Many recommend using styrofoam under a tank. Other than holding in heat in the winter does it really serve any purpose?

m8 for flat bottomed tanks the styrofoam is also for protection..... when setting up a tank a slight bit of uneveness or tiny bit of gravel under the tank when it is filled the weight could cause it to crack  I think it basically depends on how the tank was constructed and what kind of base/stand is going to support it...

On my tank the base glass doesn't touch the cabinet as there is a lip arround the base at the edges.

:)

quite right small bits of grit will crack the tank i dont think the winter warming is important to the people who make the tanks unless they make the double glased types. meanwhile i used cardbored on mine because it does the same job. i use the card that comes with it so its the right size and when its full of water i just cut away the ecess. i will let everyone know if it breaks
