At the LFS (two hours one way) and my husband got talked into a pair of these. Does anyone have any experience with them? They also go by the name of giant whiptail catfish. Just gorgeous, but we're afraid they'll be outgrowing the 55g before long. Any help appreciated.

Nice pick up :) Quite simple to care for mine take Prima pellets with the rest of my fish by always foraging over the wood for stuff it kind of reminds me of when a dog finds something interesting in a small corner in the garden the way they are when they find something good.

Sutrisoma are not the giants I think its something like Pseudosturisoma that are the giants? Could be wrong on the name - Suturisoma are the Royal Whiptails and there are a few other species in and around them.

Your tank is a good size for them they get to around 7-8 inches but are quite slender fish and produce no where near as much waste as plecs. They are a great underated family of fish the whiptails :)

Here are some images I got this morning of the whiptail with the longer tail tendril. Should help in ID. With the tendril, it's about 4 inches long. The second one is slightly shorter and with a much shorter tendril on the tail.

We're not at all sure of the ID, and have been scouring the Planet Catfish photos. The giant looks close, but not quite spot on. Any help?

Thanks!

Could be Pseudohemiodon platycephalus ? Where did you get him from?

Preliminary ID from a member of PlanetCatfish is Pseudohemiodon lamina. I got them yesterday from a LFS owner who had six or seven. He said they are wild-caught from Peru, and he wasn't quite sure of the exact species, either. I got them hoping very hard they were not giant whiptails, and it appears they are not. If they turn out to be giants, they'll be going back, because I don't have a large enough tank (55 gallon) to house them responsibly as they approach their standard mature size.

was going to say not sturisoma nice fish though

if you can get sturisoma get them I have 5 and they are beautiful fish
