Well, I think due to cross contamination of putting my betta into this ten gallon when the hydra were infesting his tank before he died....i now have planaria in with my baby plecos! And....one is dead :'( the other one is still alive and I dosed the tank with the dog dewormer Fenbendazole. Hopefully this guy will survive the stupid nasty bad planaria!! I'm so upset right now...

Anyway...i need to bleach the things I use on this tank(net, cup, gravel vac and tubing...), What would a good solution? And yes, everything will be rinsed well after soaking before use again!

bleach.  1 cup per gallon of water should be ,more than enough.

Thanks. One more question....my 5 gallon tank still has these guys. I want to get rid of the sand and take the plants out to do an alum dip. No inhabitants in the tank. Can I keep the filter going and just pour bleach in the water? Would that kill these things better?? And is it ok to use on the sponges that are in the mini canister filter? (For durability, at this point I don't need bacterial colony with nothing but plants in it.)

I would assume the Planaria are in the filter to.  So I would detach it from the side of  the tank and make sure it is 100% under water and running.  That will kill everything in it.  I would also discard any carbon filter media as it will absorb chlorine and might not release it later.  Rinse the tank completely at least 2 time with the filter running to remove all chlorine.  Please let me know how wll the Fenbendazole works I believe I have it.

I think you would be better off using Genchem No Planaria, Its not snail safe but it wont hurt fish or shrimp.

Thanks Steven. This is the filter that I have. It's a mini canister so it's all enclosed.

Do i still need to remove it from the tank? I figured if I put enough bleach in the tank that if I let it run for a while it would get the stuff in the filter too?

I more than likely will get this now since I have it in the baby pleco tank and these things already killed one. And since they came back in the small tank...i don't want to chance my other baby. Do you have to dose it more than once? Or will one dose get everything? (I also plan on doing a 50% water change in the morning and another the day after. This tank only has a sponge filter but I have a small internal I can run carbon in to get the dog dewormer out. Is this a good idea?)

It takes 72 hours, Simply follow the instructions on the packet.

The dog dewormer is rubbish its made to kill worms in dogs not in aquariums, I have no idea how to correctly dose the dog de wormer to kill planaria in a 5 gallon aquarium without harming a fish or shrimp, nor has anybody else its at best a guess.

Thanks Nick. I may still try the bleach in the 5 gallon but I really need something that works for my ten gallon that my other baby pleco is in. I don't want this one to die too. But I had to do something fast and that was all I had on hand. So even if it just takes care of them temporarily thats ok for now until I can get the no planaria stuff.

Edit to add-- just bought the no planaria from Amazon! At the moment shipping says between the 9th and the 14th. Hopefully it will get here soon!

Nick look at this link:http://www.planetinverts.com/killing_planaria_and_hydra.html.  Fenbendazole Does appear effective in an aquarium at a 1ppm dose.  The reports indicate no fish, shrimp, and in one case pond snails were harmed.  It took 24 to 48 hours to do the job. so it does appear safe and effective.

I did a 50% water change on my 10 gallon that has my baby pleco in it and dosed the tank again(2nd dose). This is 48 hours after initial dose and I'm still seeing these nasty things. I hope this 2nd dose will get a lot of them until the No Planaria stuff arrives. I think I will dose the 5 gallon too instead of bleach. These things are so easy to transfer that the container that has my nerite snails in it has these things in it too!! So I'm hoping to remedy that with a bunch of bleach baths one container at a time(I have two) and just keep switching the snails out.

I'm just still surprised I haven't seen any of these in my other ten gallon that has one guppy or my 20 gallon that has tetras! The 20 had a bunch of plants in there that I had also put in the 5. Which is where I think these came from. Unless the tetras and guppies ate them before they got out if control? I just don't know...

Use 'No Planaria', simple and effective. Also works with hydra (one dose).

Love the stuff, handy to have in the cupboard. No need to bleach the tank either

Thanks guys. The no planaria has shipped so now I just have to wait on it to get here.

Though...i noticed yesterday that the container I have my nerite snails in still has these suckers! I know I can't use the no planaria...do you guys think bleaching the container everyday will work? I have to containers...just bleached one but haven't moved them over. I also plan on "swishing" the snails around in a small bowl before putting them in clean container. Then I will bleach the other one before putting them back in it. Will this work to help get rid of them for the snails or will the snails carry them all the time now?

You can use the No Planaria, just move the snails to a different container. Give it a large water change before returning the snails

I'm meaning the container I moved the snails to have these things in it. They didn't do well with the dog dewormer treatment but other than that stuff didn't get rid of them, I didn't realize how easy it was to transfer things. Will bleach be enough to kill these in the containers I have for the snails? They are just plastic latchbox totes. Obviously I wont bleach the snails...lol. but I want to get rid of these things!
