Stonefish

it would probably be similar to my toadfish which is brackish, never moves and has a cavernous mouth!!! I made the mistake of putting quite a large puffer in with my toadfish to add some activity to the tank and it wasn;t there in the morning. My mistake for being an idiot but these kind of fish are nice to have but they don;t make for a display tank as they don;t do anything

Colin, cannot make out if you're trying to convince me (despite)....but I recall (a long time ago)... I had a Tyretrack eel which made a wonderful display and was always present or even the Ropefish I had.... any of those should fit in with this community..... Don't you think??

I know addressed to Colin but I'll stick my big nose in anyway.

Tyretracks are a great fish that would make a top display fish and reedfish I'm a huge fan of and have 4 in my tank. They are always active and people seem drawn to eel shape fish despitet the " oh eels are horrible " comments.

Thanks Simonas, but would the Reedfish (if I can get them) be ok with the Oscars and the like??

I've got my reedfish with my oscars with no problems so far althouhg I know that oscars can sometimes be unpredictable with their eating habits

My oscars are about 6 inches long so mere babies and my reedfish are about 12 to 16 inches long

from what i experienced a few years ago when we had a "freshwater stonefish" in store was that it was seriously hard to get it to eat anything other than live foods, Also it is an almost a certainty that the species will need moving over to brackish water for it to survive long term.

IMO the 12inch+ Oscars will have eaten the reedfish before they've even acclimatized to the new tank

Well then, if it's live food they want,.... I'll at least have a use for my uncontrolled population explosion...

besides the tyretrack eel you could get a fire eel. They are black and red and get a bit bigger than the tyretrack.

Actually, I saw a documentary on Africa a while back and there were these fish (common name tiger fish, not Datnoides but something else) that lived in some areas. They grew to about a foot long, were silver and had huge bloody teeth. Like a couple of seriously big canine teeth coming up from the bottom jaw and a couple coming down from the top jaw. They looked pretty impressive but might eat the oscars :)

Yes Colin I know those... A vicious and much saught after angling fish, Scientific name "Hydrocynus Vittatus", in the family Characidae, mostly found on our (S.A.) Northern Borders in the Zambezi rivers...

The current record (angling) is 12.67kg.... (about 25 pounds), caught in 1963. Even dangerous to swim in waters where they are prevalent. Average size being caught nowadays is 3.5kg...

ps... Damnit, I so hoped someone would give me a scanner/ printer copier for Christmas, but will have to go out & get my own... I've a very nice picture here which I coud've sent.

Thats him allright... He swallows your lure,... you just leave it in there...

 i've got a Hydrocynus vitattus in one of my tanks, they are pansy fish that are scared of their own shaddows.
