Stocking

So I'm gonna get rid of my mollies, because I can't add salt to the tank, as their tankmates won't like it. And they won't grow for some reason...tanks too small I guess. SO I need Stocking suggestions. I wanted some of those mini puffers. Would they work?

The tank is 15-20 gallons (The lfs didn't know...)

As you can see the tank is more tall than long, so I'd like some top-dwelling fish too. I recently added this fake branch thing that has some wisteria and a mossball in it. but my camera is broken so I'm using these old pics. I have a rubbernose plec in there, hiding the cave. The mollies I'm giving to the LFS for store credit. I have a female betta too, but I can switch her to the 6 gallon. Any stocking suggestions?

Pygmy Puffers would work ok as long as you don't want any other tank mates. Am sure a pleco would prob be ok but anything else would be fin nipped and harrassed.

Most plecs get way too big. Some dwarf puffers would be cool. Plant it up well and a possible tank mate would eb ottos.

In that tank I'd have
4 Dwarf Pufferfish
4 Otos
And thats it

If you are seriously thinking puffers, you need to sort out an awful lot more furniture/plants to allow "victim" fish to find cover, plus give them an intresting environment to investigate.

I dont think you canhave more than 1 dwarf puffer in that size tank unless it was very heavily planted, as dwarf puffers are aggressive towards eachother, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong lol. I'm just saying what I've read on here before

I'd go 6 Pygmy Cories (bottom)
6 Rummy Nose Tetra (middle)
6 Cardinal Tetra (middle)
Pair of Honey Gourami's or Dwarf Cichlid. (feature)

you could deff have a bristlenose pleco and a couple of dwarf gouramis
if you really want a puffer...
i recomend getting either some pygmy puffer(brackish) or 2 colomesus puffers(tropical)
the colomesus puffers are very nice and are very active
but they do have a special diet... carnivorous
because they're beaks grow (yes puffers have beaks) they need hard food e.g. frozen prawns and snails from your garden
and you could have a pleco with them but it would be taking a risk

Pygmy puffers are not brackish they are freshwater and Colomesus aka South American Puffers get too large for a 20 gallon large tank.


If your after puffers they are freshwater contrary to what above says and would work well in that tank in a well decorated set up

well really yes as will says.. get the pygmy puffer but it will most prob have to be an all species tank
or just get a couple of dwarf gouramis and some cories

Borneo puffers could work, but the amount in a 20g varies with species, as C. irrubesco for example are quite social so you could possibly do two sexed pairs or a hareem, but C. salivator are not and so need a forest for a sexed pair.
