What fish would you choose for a newbie but that would still make a nice appearence? Make sure that you are specific.

Remember that this is for a standard 55 gallon tank and for a newbie.

I myself would have to say a tetra tank because there are so many different varietes of tetras that are easy to care for and are readily available at a cheap price. I would have a set up with mabye 8-12 neon tetras, 1 female betta, mabye 8-12 rummynose tetras, a pleco and several gold skirt tetras and mabye some type of pleco. I would put a nice black background to show of the neon tetras.

I would have a tropical community with either a school of corydoras or a bristlenose for the bottom. Or maybe make that a pair of bristlenoses. Then either:

a group of golden barbs+ a school of danios
or
5 female platies+ large school of tetras (black neons, glowlights or black phantoms)
or
big school of bleeding hearts

Whichever fish you get make sure you research them carefully. Tetras and betta's cannot be kept together, for example since the tetras can get quite nippy. :)

My choice is for a tropical community of basic fish but nice ones it allows you to learn about various types of fish in one tank.

Really female bettas can't be kept with tetras? I've read somewhere on this forum about people keeping bettas with tetras but apparently I was wrong. What other fish sort of like a betta could be kept without any problems? I have been doing a lot of research but really nothing says what could be kept with female bettas. Thank You. Wow would I have really made a huge mistake. lol. Thanks

Bad advice! Tetras + betta = finless betta! Also neon tetras need mature tanks of around 12-14 weeks, they are particularly sensitive to changes in your water stats which in a new tank, you just cannot rely on consistancy.

What do you mean 'like a betta' i dont know anything thats like a betta? Are you referring to a 'centrepiece fish'?? Why did you specify you wanted a female betta anyway, whats so great about them? Not saying i think theyre crap but its not really a generally kept hobby fish unless you're gonna use them for breeding, they are better off kept in 3's or 4's anyway.

When I said something like a betta I meant a centerpiece fish. Thats also why I suggested a betta.

I also noticed that in your sig strawberry, it says you only have 2 neon tetrasn Neon tetras are best kept in groups of 6 or more. I hope I was of some help.

Well obviously that depends on what else you have stocked in there? I wouldnt class female betta as a centrepiece, the majority are quite drab! Interpet's book 'Community fishes' is a good read.

To fishrfancy... i did have 5 initially but had a case of NTD and have no desire to get anymore at the moment. They seem perfectly happy as they are IMO, they have no need to schoal around as there is nothing aggressive in there with them. But thats just in my experience

I'm sorry about your case of NTD strawberry. Is there any other fish that you could think of 2 be used as a centerpiece?

Just thought of a good centerpiece fish a killifish.

You can get some nice plecos, how about glass catfish? Although they are small they are unusual.. Or a couple of dwarf gouramis?

For center piece I'd add a pair of Dwarf Gourami's either the typical blue or the bright red variety
