Agreed with Star on the RTBS they also have issues with loaches quite often because of how similar they look. It is also important that you get all one species of loach in the same manor as you would get all the same of one type of tetra.

As for alternative tetras there are quite a few that shouldnt get eaten how about flame tetras or emperor tetras?

And afraid balas are still a no no even in this size tank IMO a good alternative that would look exceptional in your tank I reckon would be rose line sharks. Very similar to balas but more colour and half the size need to be in a group of about 5 or so though .

I would be inclined to go with 6-8 loaches down from 10 and stick to all 1 type. Polkadot (botia kubotai), yoyo (botia almorhae) and zebra (botia striata) are all good loaches, they can be mixed too, but it would be preferable if they were in a single species group.

Probably best to avoid cardinals with angelfish but there are a number of people who successfully keep both together. They also have a higher success rate than neons (both innesi and simulans). Another small colourful tetra to consider are rummynose tetras. My 2 angelfish don't even look at mine.

Severums like to eat plants. So do rainbowfish but I think the severum would be the more destructive.

i quite like the look of that... when i previously had a RTBS it was fine ith all the other fish apart from the Tiger Barbs. it used to constantly chase them... so i think i will dropp that from the list... regarding the Loaches.. what i was think is have 3 different loaches... so 3 yoyos, 3??? 3??? would that be ok or should i just go for 5yoyos and 5

regarding the tetra i would like to go for these to replace the cardinals so 10 of these i think and 10 of emperor tetras.

plants wise i am going to stick with silk plants... dont really want to have to worry about the plants

Dont be put off live plants there are so many easy care live plants that you just need to put in your tank and have done lol. Java Fern, Valis few other species as well Im not the best with plants so maybe ask in the planted section for guidance on a low tech set up but if you just prefer plastic go for it

I think on the stock list you would have to choose between the rainbow fish or the denison barbs as I think both would be pushing it a bit. Also do you have the scientfic name for the gold tetras as there are a few tetras with that common name and the one Im thinking of is falls into the same catagory as cardinals with regards the angels. Also the emperors are bigger than the cardinals and also have a thicker body so that needs to be reflected in the stocking and I would just consider a single school of 15 emperor tetras rather than 2 schools of 10.

Java fern is ok with servs, I have it in my tank, there is someing else it needs to be grown on wood and starts with "a" anubis or someting like that that the servs dont touch.

plants wise i dont know much about them. i would love to have a planted set up but i think i will maybe do that in the future with a small tank to practise...

yeh you mentioned it. i dont know didley squat about plecs opart from BNs. ive had a clown plec before but i never got to saw it. so are most plecs similiar in terms of they hide alot and never come out or is there plecs that are quite active. i had a look at the royal panaque i think its called and they look very nice. i am just worried that they may cost a bit..lol

Hi yeah no problem

The royals are a very slow growing species and if you went with one of them I would just have it as that plec only. As they do grow quite large and are sometimes territorial. Different plecs are more active than others but I think it depends on how secure they feel and also lighting if there is a subdued section of the tank maybe with use of floating plants or something they might hang out more around there.

L numbers vary depending on size or species usually between £15-£40 sometimes even more and adults of some species are worth hundreds of pounds.

Ok so i have got some stock in my tank...

i currently have 3 danios which were rescued from my mate who gave me his 30l tank as he was fed up with it

so stocking now is

3 danios - will be removed at some point
10 neons - final
10 gold tetras - final

2 BN plecs - final
1 horseface loach - final
3 corys ( 1x peppered 1x bronze cory 1x albino) These will be pushed up to 8-10
