Just started up a 75 gallon tank today, going to let it cycle for 2 weeks.

I was thinking of adding in:

5 Giant Danios(to start the tank)
1 Oscar
2 Severums
1 Polypterus Senegalis
Perhaps 1 Uaru,
and perhaps a bottomfish, such as a Sailfin Pleco or Featherfin Sydontis

Tank dimension are 48 long by 18 wide by 21 deep.
Is this feasible?

I'm afraid the tank will be overstocked, I would choose only 1 of the larger growing cichlids and have say 2 medium ones. Also don't get a sailfin plec, it will get too big for the tank.

Don't cycle it for a set period of time; cycle it until the cycle is complete.

If that doesn't make sense, check out the pinned topic on fishless cycling-that'll explain it better than I can. If it does make sense, sorry for sounding patronising!

I would not use danios to cycle the tank, in fact if you can bear to wait, please use the fishless cycling method, link here: http://www.fishforums.net/content-page/113...ination/page/0/

If you do decide to cycle with fish, then on a 75g tank thats an awful lot of water changes and a large volume of water you will need to change daily, if not twice daily, to keep the ammonia and nitrite at an acceptable level for the fish, it will also take a lot longer than fishless cycling.

what filtration system will you have? Oscars and plecs are very messy fish and require good filtration, so you should take this into account when deciding on which fish you would like to keep.

Yeah, on further reading I don't think I'd get the Sailfin Pleco.

Is there another species of Pleco or other bottomfish that would be suitable? Would they get along with the Polypterus Senegalis?

Many plecos will get along just fine with polys. The only reason I can think they wouldn't is if they would get eaten. I have an L200 with mine.

I'm a cichlid guy so gotta agree with shroob that having an o and 2 sevs in a 75 is way overstocked right there. A single o or a single sev is the recommended min in a 75G for both fish for proper territorial creation.

Second, I believe though maybe not as sensitive as its cousin the Discus, the Uaru needs a fairly clean tank with low nitrates and with messy fish like plecos and big cichlids, thats gonna be very hard to maintain without constant cleaning of the tank.

Just my two cents

Ox :good:

O, and almost forgot to say. :yahoo: ~~~2000 Posts~~~~ :yahoo:

Ahh, so maybe not the Uaru then.

So...

the list would be:
5 Giant Danios
1 Oscar
2 Severums
1 Polypterus Senegalis
1 6 inch bottomfish.

The previous owner of this tank had half a dozen Severums, 3 blood parrots, and a small catfish in the tank, and the aquarium was spotless, as he took good care of it and changed the water every week and a half. I have always done weekly water changes, and with my new Python this should not be a problem.

I have 2 Severums in my tank, 75 gallon. I can't imagine having an Oscar in there too. Not with all being full grown. Sorry.
