Stocking Ideas For 34L

Looking at some ideas for stocking a small 34L (7.5g, 9usg - Rena AquaCube 34), maybe an oddball species that I haven't considered yet?

I haven't decided if I want lots of plants yet or just a few... fish stock would probably decide that.


I've mainly kept Tetras and Plecs in the past so wanting to avoid them if possible, I am currently setting up a largish new marine setup - but have gotten MTS and got offered this little (yes I know, little) tank for nothing


Just have the feeling for something "unusual" but not sure what.


EDIT: I have a Rena BioCube 50! So slightly larger.

Betta pugnax? have a look at some of the wild species, there are some nice ones out there.

dwarf puffers. you could have 2 maby 3 if you plant it really well.
or a small comunitty tank with 6 pygmy corys 6 galaxy rasbora and a pair of endlers

I was just about to come back here and edit my post regarding Puffers - now I have been looking at these for the Marine tank but I want to go down the Reef route and it's hit and miss keeping even some of the dwarf ones with them (although safe bet, from what I understand).

I know there are freshwater puffers but didn't imagine you could "fit" any in this size until I saw someone mention (and another confirm) one for a 5g tank. Any other puffer species for this size?

If I had just 1 or 2 - tank makes? (inverts?)



I have to consider actually finding somewhere that would stock these though (doing a search for that now).

yh dwarf puffers are freshwater and need 5g for the first one and 3g for every extra one. shrimp and snails wont do well because the puffer will eat them they love small snails to eat. ive heard ottos sometimes work but they are extreamly agressive so its luck if it works.

Dwarf Puffers are pretty common, another species I came accross in Romsey was a Dwarf Wild Indian Puffer (think that's what they called it) it's slighlty larger than the standard Dwarf Puffer but I really don't know much about it.

Red Eye Puffers are fresh water also but I think that tank would be too small.

I wouldn't recommend inverts with puffers they will eat anything! You might get away with some larger shrimp like the amano but it's a risk.

As a guide, what sort of size shrimp could a dwarf puffer gulp down?

A larger shrimp any risk to puffers themselves? I don't really mind "taking a risk" though maybe the puffers would still harass a "too large to eat" shrimp?



Liking the look of the Rasbora's, never kept them before.


Any other suggestions?

i dont think any shrimp work but im not to sure but i know they puffers will just nipp and nip at them ive heard of them killing apple snails. the rasbora are nice and only get to about 2cm but they are quite expensive there £4 each round hear.

I will have a good think about this - as I won't have the tank for a few weeks.


The puffers sound a nice idea, although they are small fish in small numbers, unlike shoals of tetra etc. Any other ideas along the line of slightly larger fish kept in lesser numbers?

I've been thinking about this more and what "concerns" me is the waste these little puffs excrete and generally people are saying large water changes often.

I am not sure if this is what I am looking for this time around.

I've never kept crabs before, though 7gal is pushing it right?

hey

ive kept a dwarf puffer in a 30 litre with no issue with messines atall, they love broad leved plant to 'rest' on at night and they can be kept in goups i keep mine with a few pymaus corydoras with absolutely no issuse what so ever, the cories are all fine and the puffers just more concerned with food tbh

< this one is my little girl ... shes called bob, (males will have a dark line on the chest at maturity)

they are probably one of the most charismatic fish ive ever kept and thats saying alot, this little girl always come to the front... fears no one and will be fed by hand. they are just simply the coolest fish to keep ... they also recognise the owner and will push themselve up against the glas until you give in and put some blood worm in there

some suggest you need snails to keep thier beaks whittled down but tbh whenever i feed mine snail it just flips em over and sucks out the juicy bits.... never realy crushes em. i use meal worms to feed mine mostly just cuttin the top of and letting it suck out the goods, you can get these in any reptile shop and even some fish shops.

soooo much better than a betta imo
and because if you get one you need a heavily planted tank .. nitrates arnt ever realy a problem. just a bonus

What's your tank maintenance schedule? and what plant stock do you keep? Any pictures of your setup?

ok thats my tank

plants ... anything with big leaves to hied in generaly stay away from red leaved plants, i currently have java fern tho not in this picture and also i have anubias and anoth im not to sure about

the grassy plants tend to die alot and becasue its such a small tank i do a 50 percent change a week .. which is only like one bucket, its not completely necissary but i do it cause its easy and it keeps it nice n clear ...

generaly speaking smaller tanks require more maintinence cause the filter that come with them are pathetic and less water to dilute polution/ nitrates
