Stocking A Hex Aquarium

Yeah, we'll see how long it takes to talk my husband into another tank... Not much of an animal person, but he married one so he's trying to be understanding.

Finally found my ammonia at Ace Hardware! Doesn't foam, no scent or other additives. Hooray! Also got an Aqua Clear filter and a nice submersible heater. Testing out the amount of ammonia I need to add, and then we'll be underway. Just to double check -- I didn't put the carbon in the filter basket. Was that the right thing to do? And do I need to buy something extra to put in its place? Can run back out this afternoon if so.

Someday I'll figure everything out.

Was about to write you that OM47 recommends Ace Hardware as a good spot to find ammonia, but you've found it! Great!

Yes, you want to replace the carbon with some other sort of biomedia like ceramic gravel, ceramic rings, Seachem Matrix, coarse sponge.. just depends on what you can find. Many of the other filter makers will have good replacement media on the LFS shelves, Fluval, Rena, quite a few.

You could go ahead and start your fishless cycling though if you're ready and just turn off the filter later and add the extra media once you get it. It doesn't have to be full for you to start. After all, the first week or two the ammonia may just sit there and not appear to be doing anything! Pretty boring!
