Stocking A 46G Tank

What about;
6 khulis
10-15 cardinal tetra
2 Blue Rams
1 Rubbernose pleco
1 female Pearl Gourami

that sounds pretty good as i don't think my tank will be big enough for a school of 5 bosemannis. would this be my limit? or would there be room for other fish? I don't actually have the tank yet, so it's hard to visualize the setup with the fish.

If you leave out the boesemani you can have a trio of gouramis. Plus, if you choose to go for 1 gourami only you can also take a male. Gouramis are only agressive towards their own kind (territorial behaviour) but are sweeties towards other non-abantoid fish.

after looking at the different types of gouramis, i find that i like the paradise fish (gourami) best. if i do go with this one, my stock would look like this:

6 khulis
10-15 cardinal tetra
2 Blue Rams
1 Rubbernose or bristlenose pleco
1 Male Paradise Gourami

would there be room for a small shoal of harlequin raspboras? or would that be pushing it? or is there another type of mid to bottom swimmer that would work well?

btw, I'd like to thank everyone for their help. :thanks:

Don't take paradise fish! These are very agressive and need to be in a species tank only! You can take any of the following for your tank: honey, dwarf, pearl, 3-spot, sparkling (but these are very small), kissing, moonlight, or banded gouramis. The most common ones are the honey, dwarf, pearl and 3-spot.

oops! i had looked at a few sites to read up the different gouramis, but i guess i didn't check the right ones! :X after looking further, i have found quite a few sites that calimed that the paradise fish were not good with smaller fish. thanks for letting me know!!! I'll probably try to get a banded gourami if i can, or a pearl if i can't. too bad really, cause i really liked the look of the paradise fish too... :-(

I almost made the same mistake a few years ago.... Luckily the lefs owner was honest enough to tell me that it wouldn't be a good idea with my set up. I still favour him over others, thanks to that and other advice he has given me.... :good:

i really only have 1 lfs where i live, other than petsmart & another small petstore that i won't support as they sell puppies & kittens. the lfs seems pretty helpful, so here's hoping that they carry the fish i want or will order them in for me! :D

I know what you mean: my options here are also very limited. Luckily as you said, I have an lfs, that will look for things for me in Mexico city when he goes (1x week) plus a have a friend that is even more addicted than I have (currently has 9 tanks running) and she also gets me fish and equipment and saves it for me until I come to Mexico city.

ok, so my set-up will look something like this (after fishless cycle of course!):

46g bowfront tank with sand substrate, mixed fake/real plants (newbie in regards to plants so will have mostly fake at first)

6x kuhli loach
10-15x Cardinals
2x Blue Rams
1x Banded gourami
1x rubbernose or bristlenose pleco (depending on lfs)

Would i be able to fit another shoal of some sort of tetra or harlequin raspboras? or would this be pushing it?

All input is greatly appreciated! i'v already learned so much from this site! :D

The Planted Tank section is AMAZING for getting help on live plants. I was a aquatic plant-clueless until a few months ago, now I've got 2 fully planted, 1 semi-planted tank. Read up on the Planted Tank pinned threads. They're pretty helpful.

Personally, I think how you lay the tank out decor-wise and how heavily planted the tank is will depend on whether or not there is room for a second shoal of tetra or harlequins.
