Hey guys,

I am at the end of my cycle and am ready to add in my fish, only problem is I don't know what kind of fish I'd like or what would be good for suck a large tank. I am very new to all this so please go easy on me cause I have a feeling I will ask a lot of silly questions.

I like colourful fish and already that puts me in the wrong as I set up a fresh water vs a salt water aquarium. I also would like 1 or 2 larger fish, but feel this may put the smaller fish on the end of the food chain.

When I went to the pet store I found a awesome looking Australian blue crayfish but they said this would not work well with other fish, they also had some neat purple crabs but again same thing and not ment for other fish. I was looking at these thinking they would have made a good bottom dweller but I guess I will have to stick to some sort of pleco or a twig catfish.

What other fish would you recommend? My filter, heater, aeration system and thermometer are brand new. I will be going back to the store tomorrow to see what fish they actually have tomorrow.

Thanks guys and gals.

Do you want a community tank? For a beginner I would recommend a community or even a bio-type which can also look quite cool! :)

I understand what a community tank is, but what is a bio type? I would really like to get a school of some sort of colourful fish and 1-2 larger peaceful fish but I'm scared they would still eat the smaller ones.

A bio-type is where you take a selected area and then choose from the fish in that area, you add plants etc. from that area as well! It's pretty much just trying to recreate the natural habitat or a particular area!
Depending on where you live you could even do one for your country!

And for a larger colourful fish you could consider a gourami, depending on your other stock you could either get a dwarf gourami or just a gourami.

Thank you for the fast replies, I do like gourmi's I had a few in my old 10 gallon tank. I did some reading on the blue crayfish and it says online that they are quick to become friendly with larger fish, but small fish will be eaten. So I am thinking of still getting one now. Or atleast giving it a try.

Please note I was checking your other thread and no, you aren't cycled. Not even started, not what you want to hear but you run the risk of the fish dying pretty quickly in a uncycled tank.

There's a help section on here that tells you about the tank cycle, I would link you but am on my mob phone.

Thanks for the link, well I feel I wasted three weeks ( sigh ) . Oh well looks like tomorrow instead of fish, I need to get a thing of ammonia, a master tester kit, and possibly a new heater? My current heater is brand new and even at its lowest setting it's heating my water to the point where the glass on the fish tank is actually hot to touch. I will make a post tomorrow with my Ph levels and ammonia levels as that is what the cycling tutorial said to check at first. Thanks guys glad I didn't buy fish just to hurt the poor guys.

No problem. Good luck with cycling. I'm sure if you have any more questions there will be someone here who can help you! :)

Don't feel too glum about it, you're doing the right thing for your fish.  Anyway if you're anything like me, you'll need the full cycling time to plan your stock

75g gives you lots of options, I bet this tank is going to be stunning.

Also, freshwater fish can be colourful too!  Google some of the following:

Electric blue ram
German blue ram
Red severum
Sumatran neon goby (red and blue varieties)
Peacock goby
Empire gudgeon
Cockatoo apistogramma
Lyretail killifish
Betta splendens (red, violet and mustard gas are my favourite colours, but there are loads)
Dwarf gourami
Sunset honey gourami
Golden gourami
Blue gourami

All as stunning as marines, in my book

although obviously they shouldn't all be in the same tank!

There are loads more; I'm relatively new here, I learned about most of the above from chatting to people on this forum.  My advice is hang around here, read tank journals, look at pics of other people's fish and ask lots of questions - you'll soon have loads of ideas.

Good luck with the cycling - kudos for doing this the responsible way!

I'd get some Rainbowfish. They're colourful and quite active. A nice shoal in that sized tank would be good!

Thanks for all the great ideas and support guys this is a great community. I'm already getting an idea of how I'd like it. I will post pics of my tank after I change the water out and the cloudiness settles
