ok, so i made my own tank, its about 140 us gallons, but i'm having trouble deciding on what to put in it, actually its more of an upgrade from my 20 and 10 gallon tanks..anyway, bottom of the tank is 96in. x 18in., this is what i was thinking of throwing in it

18 tiger barbs
2 rams
2 kribensis
1 red tailed shark
4 neon gold rosy barb
6 serpae tetra
1 rubbernose pleco
6 julii cory
4 gold barb
2 cherry barb

would they all get along?
is it over stocked?
is there room for any other fish?
any other suggestions?

You know tanks look much better when they only have 4-6 different types of fish in them. And Bigger schoold of fish behave much more interestingly.

well like i said, its an upgrade of my existing tanks, so i'm not about to throw out the fish i have just because 4-6 different species would look better in a big tank
..and i like diversity
so i'm just curious as to if theres going to be a problem between the ones i'd like to put in there, or if its over stocked that way, or if theres room for more, or what, before i actually stock it

but you've got a point..maybe it would look better to be more like
24 tiger barbs
2 rams
2 kribs
6 cory
8 serpae tetra
6 of those gold neon barb guys (i have 4, got conned into getting them without knowing how big they got)
1 rtb

That looks good to me (may look a bit on the crowded side but I'm not quite sure I can't visualise 53 fish at once) but they should be fine so long as the Kribs and Rams ge along (I wouldnt know if they would)

yeah thats the problem i'm having, because its such a big tank, and theres so many fish, i can't really tell if its over crowded or not, granted its not like i'm going to get them all at once, especially since my girlfriend and i seem to use buying fish as a way of dating so it'll be a little easier to tell if its getting crowded as i'm stocking it, but still, it'd be nice to know if i plan on having too many in there before-hand

If it is a 140 gallon tank it is noway overcrowded.

Your largest fish in there would be the RTBS. I think you could up the numbers on some of the smaller shoaling fish.

The only potential issue is the RTBS and Tiger barbs. I have read som many times people having thise fish squabbling with each other. However it is a large tank and all may be ok.

so far only one of my tigers gets picked on, and picks on, the rtb, but it seems like its simply because space is a problem at the moment in the existing tank

so is it understocked keeping in mind that its U.S. gallons and not U.K. or is sanj just mistaken?

thats the thing i'm worried about the most really, i wouldn't want to have this community all planned, and then like, find out there'd be so many fish competing for space that they'd get sick or something

I wouldnt say understocked as such because you dont have to keep fish to the carrying capacity of an aquarium. However what i am saying is that it could carry more fish quite easily.

What are the dimensions of your aquarium? I can get a better idea. However if it is 140 US gallons it is larger than both my aquariums and they are quite large.

In the UK a standard given for fish 3" or less is 1" per gallon(UK) for the first 6 months and after that when the aquarium is well matured and if maintenance is kept up (water changes etc), increased to 2" per gallon (UK).

This is the advice given in the leading PFK magazine, and the people who contribute to this have had years of experiance and research in the aquatic field, many of them having doctorates in the subject.

Ths standard does not work for larger fish like RTBS. A 6" adult requires more space and produces alot more space than say six (1") neon tetras.

Looks like a good list, and remember you can never understock but you can easily overstock.

Keep with what you have at the moment, then addmore if you think it would work once the tank is set up etc.

Ben

the dimensions are about 96 long, 18 wide, and 19 high, and as for pics, i'll gladly post some once i get my digital camera working again

According to PFK your aquarium system:

System type: Tropical freshwater aquarium

Dimensions: 244 x 46 x 48cm/96" x 18" x 19

Surface area: 1.11 sq m/12.00 sq ft/1728 sq in

Volume: 538 l./119 gal.

Probable volume: 484 l./107 gal. (after displacement)

We would recommend keeping up to 107"/271cm of fish in your system. However, depending on the type of fish, your filtration and your maintenance level you may be able to exceed this to a suggested maximum of 213"/542cm of fish. However, this, of course, requires care and thought for the type of fish being stocked. We would advise you to read our Frequently asked questions on stocking densities for more details on this subject.

I have kept rams and kribs together before....and it works ok for a while. I wouldn't recommend it though. The kribs tend to bully the rams........mine eventually got to the point that the male krib killed my male ram....not good, and not something I would repeat or advise.
