Hello I am planning on getting a 15 gallon fluval flex aquarium (16Lx15Wx15H) and was wondering what you think of my stock ideas for a planted tank and what ones you think will work or not work

Idea 1= 1 male betta, 6 diamond head neon tetras, and 6 pand cories(will use sand)

Idea 2= A pair of kribensis

Idea 3= 2 African clawed frogs

Thank you for any thoughts, alternative ideas, or comments

One thing is that the frogs should not be kept with fish, they will be constantly hiding and may starve as they are slow eaters with poor eyesight

What is your pH, GH, and KH? You can find out this information, by going to your local water providers website, or by calling them. We need actual numbers as well. (Ex. dH or ppm)

I am going to bed now, but I should be able to help you out in the morning, if no one else has. :)

Thank you I would plan on only keeping the 2 frogs if I did that idea
If you did that you could easily have 6 or 7 frogs, they do better in groups too!

The betta should be kept alone, or with shrimp and snails.

You could do the tetras and corydoras without the betta though :)

For the frogs I’m talking about clawed not dwarf ones. clawed frogs get like 5 inch. And if I kept the betta idea and it wasn’t to aggressive could I keep cories with it? And I’m having trouble finding gh and kh but my ph is 6.8
And what are your thoughts on the kribensis in that size I have heard mixed thoughts of them in that size tank

And next to ppm( ppm= .1548) it says nitrate I’m confused about that? I have to go to bed so any responses I will see in the morning

1. IMO, I personally wouldn't add neon tetras and panda Corydoras in that size aquarium. They should be in aquarium length of at least 30".

2. A 15 gallon might be on the small size for kribensis, unless you're intending on breeding them.

3. Don't know much about frogs, but I believe that African clawed frogs are larger than African dwarf frogs. I think for an aquarium that size should have one. Don't take my words for granted because I don't know much about frog care.

African clawed frogs should not be kept with fish as they are likely to eat them. You can keep maybe 2 ACF's in this tank but no fish; or fish but no frogs.
The other thing about frogs is that they are sensitive to fish medication so if you ever had sick fish, you couldn't treat them with frogs in the tank.
If you are really keen on keeping frogs, do a search on this forum for posts by Jenste. She has not posted for some time, but she was an expert on frogs and kept ACF's.

The Flex is an awkward tank to stock because if its shape - the swimming length is short. The best place to research fish is https://www.seriouslyfish.com/knowledge-base/ The profiles on there give a lot of information including the minimum tank size, hardness and temperature requirements, type of habitat they come from and so on.

Have you looked on your water provider's website for hardness? If they don't give it, other options are to take a sample of tap water to an LFS and ask them to test it - but make sure they give you a number and the unit of measurement - or to buy a GH tester.

The closest fish store is 45 minutes away and I’m only 13 and my family is only going to places we need to during quarantine, but I will try to figure out my other water chemistry when I get a master test kit.

I have watched many videos and read about how to cycle my tank so don’t worry about that Phoenix. I will take away the tetras and cories, I love the look of cories so I can see myself with mts in the future. I also like the frogs and kribensis but I think it would be best if I started with a betta. What do you think? And what tankmates would you recommend if any even if it’s snails and shrimps what types could work? Sorrry if I’m asking a lot.

I would personally do the betta first. See how he gets along with the shrimp. If he is pretty chill, then get some corys. You just need to keep a close eye on him, sometimes they will snap. ;)

Thank you is 6 cories to much if he is chill. And I like the look of dumbos but also like plakats as my 2nd favorite. do dumbos have any disadvantages like some long fin fish?

I think 6 Cory's is a good group for that size of a tank. (If he is cool with other fish being in his tank)

I find that (IME) Dumbo's are less aggressive than any other betta out there. They have no disadvantages to my knowledge.
