Stock For A 4 Foot Tank?

im planning to get a 4ft ,

and i want to buld the stock around the Red tail black shark,
so Far i have this on the list

1. Jack Dempsey - are they easy to find in Au?
2. a Bristlenose catfish - should i get more then one?
3. a shoal of glass fish
4. some gold,blue or peral gourmies
please point out if the list won't work<< a pair
5. 4 sword tails

uhmm would 5clown loch be too much?
so far i got a fish tank of live breeders and neons, and a peral gourmies, i can take care of the fish, i just don't know much of the medium-large size fishes.
can u suggest me some medium to large size fish , thanyou

update: more active swiming top and middle fish would be great

Hi there.

I would say that 5 clown loaches in a 4ft tank wouldn't be a good idea. These fish grow upto 12" long and your tank wouldn't be suitable for them.

As for BN plecs you can have more than 1 but you need to make sure there are plenty of caves/hiding places for them as they can be territorial.

A jack dempsey with Gouramis sounds like a recipe for disaster to me, but anything can happen if you get fish when they are very small and let them grow together...still doesn't sound promising.

I would lose the Gouramis and one of the shoaling fish from the list, probably the swordtails, and instead get a couple of other cichids to co-exist with the JD...maybe 1 x Acara and 1 x Sev???

1.either Jack dempsey or a golden male gourmi
2. Acara and sev if i can find a Jack dempsey if gourmi " please add" maybe some kind of loach?
3. shoal of glass fish, ill add the sword tails if i can't find the Jack dempsey.
4. 2 or 3 Bristlenose catfish

would else would i be able to add on stock?

To get a rough idea on stocking try inputting your tank and filter along with all your desired fish into http/www.aqadvisor.com

It will give you a general idea on your stocking, and pH requirements of the fish etc...

tbh, I wouldn't have any cichlids with Gouramis....except for maybe dwarf cichlids such as rams etc, but even then it's not ideal...

Go on, go cichlid with a shoaling fish and bottom feeders/cleaning crew

What are the dimensions of the tank like gallons and liters wise? Sevs need 75 gallons minimum which is possible in a 4 foot tank but just to check.

If it where me I would go for -

1 x Jack Dempsey
2 x Bristlenose catfish
5 x Humphead Glass fish - very tough fish will be able to withstand the JD but stick to 1 male and 3 female
5 x sword tails - good dither for JD fast and quick reproducing very natural tank mates as well.

jack dempsey are reasonably easy to find in australia. dont put a gt and jd together.

tbh ur probably better off sticking to mainly asian fish since you u were building the tank around the rtbs.

1 red tailed black shark
6-10 tiger barbs or other barbs
6-12 harlequin rasbora or similar (optional)
4-6 kuhli or yoyo loach (yoyo loach might not work with rtbs)
1-6 gourami (consider NOT getting tiger barbs if u get gourami)

dont pick the max numbers for every group

yoyo loach are usually sold as reticulated pakistani loach in australia and kuhli loach are usually sold as coolie loach
