Stingrays Massacred

We seem to have reached point, in the UK at least, where people can't accept the concept of an accident and have the need to apportion blame on someone. It saddens me that an individual(s) would want to take out revenge on an animal merely carryoing out its natural behaviour.

what are your projects?

Wallet, Shoulder Holster and Strap (for cell phones and or wallet). I would like to get a large piece for a shotgun (project) for back packing. Stuff's very tough and resists the scrapes.

using them for leather or for there skin is a huge waste too. :/

Ideally the Stingray is skined then the "wings" used for eats. I like mine oven roasted and much tastier than shark :good: . But this being the "real" world at best one can just hope it become one or the other (Leather keeps longer and fetches a better price  ).

According to newspapers some Australians are massacring stingrays to 'avenge' Irwin. Wildlife commitees (sp? lol) have obviously asked for an end, but all these people are doing is tarnishing his name and what he worked for

That is horrible. It really does make me feel ashamed to be Australian... I hope you guys believe me when I say these idiots are certainly a minority! :-(

Steve would be truly saddened to hear this. I hope for his sake, and the sake of the rays, that these dimwits are brought to justice.

I think these people are just using his death as an excuse to go out and kill something and dont actually care what he was about. If they knew what that guy was about they would be out doing some sort of conservation work are trying to learn more about the animals. I bet he's turning in his grave right now at the thought of it, at the end of the day he died doing something that he enjoyed which is what he wanted anyway. I might not have liked his TV programmes but I thought he was a great guy.

Dont worry Splish... As with anything I think most people understand that its only normally the stupid minority that spoil it for everyone else. :/

People are jumping to conclusions though. It's *thought* that they are killed to revenge Steve Irwin, it isn't said for certain.

Stingrays have been killed and had their stings chopped off before. A lot of fishermen that have stingrays caught in their nets chop off the stingers so protect themselfs from getting hurt while handling the fish to get it out of the nets. They care about the nets, not the fish.

True, it's not usual to happen in such big proportions (it was 2 days, first day there were 2 found, second day there were 8), but it's not impossible. Had this happened a couple of weeks later there wouldn't be news stories everywhere saying it's revenge, they're more than likely just write it down to fishermen.

As long as it's not a certain I wouldn't like to blame anyone for it.

Thanks Fillet. :)

It really is unbelievable... I am starting to think as well that maybe the people killing the rays have done so for a while and are just using Steve's death as a pathetic excuse. Anyone who truly understood what he was all about wouldn't consider for a minute that he would have wanted 'revenge'.

The people killing these animals couldn't possibly be Steve Irwin fans, and I don't think they're doing it out of revenge. I think that the publicity Steve's death has gotten has greatly increased people's fear of stingrays (those 'swim with the stingrays' boats will lose a ton of business) and that is why they're being massacred.

People who admired Steve Irwin, even the ignorant ones, would know better than to kill any living creature in his name. Therefore, I truly think the main motive here is fear. People fear what they don't understand. Now that there has been such a public fatality caused by a stingray, people who don't know any better will view them as menaces. It's very, very unfortunate, but stingrays around the world will likely pay for this one incident that was nothing more than a fluke. :(

maybe it's always happening there - the stingray killing.
just that it is now being blown out of proportion because of a famous person's death.

The article I read said it was an increase from the norm (I think they found 10 in one day on a single beach), and usually the tails are not severed. Either way, it's a real pity.

The thing is- Steve died doing what he KNEW would kill him. He knew invading animals natural habitats, invading thier natural life would eventually provoke a reaction that he couldn't handle. He's done a few interviews that have brought that up. I don't get why people are surprised that he passed on this way. Yes, it's sad. Yes I think he's done a great deal for raising awareness. But being surprised that an animal will attack you when you should never disrupt it? Nah, don't understand that one. Killing the stingrays is just the kind of ignorant reaction you'd expect from the extreme morons who think you should 'avenge' the death of someone who died doing what he loved and knew would eventually do him in. Absolutely pathetic.

I wonder if the people going out "to get some" look like the people in the movie Jaws. Shotguns, boxes of explosives and away we go out on some inflateables.

Latest news according to MSN is that Irwins daughter 8-year-old Bindi, will have her own tv show airing in January called"jungle girl" and has vowed to swim with the stingrays herself.

If these stingrays truly are dieing at the hands of people seeking "revenge"....
Words cannot sum up how disgraceful and pathetic this event is. Truly the last thing Steve would want.
Poor Steve is probably turning in his grave. Rest in peace, Steve.
