I bought a rena xp3 last week, my first external. I'm curently using the single nozzole. I'm running highish wpg and co2 so i don't want massive water movement, but would like a decent flow rate.

Should i use the spray bar or the nozzole? Also, can i get away with putting the nozzole/spray bar quite deep and would you guys (edited, thanks nukeonekitty) and gals have it horizontal or vertical?

Don't call us gays! haha... I have the same filter and I use the power jet at the surface for water movement. Either is fine just control the flow rate by adjusting it at the outlet. I don't think it matters if it is under water at all. I would put it in a place where it would move the most water possible...

I prefer a submerged spray bar personally. This moderates the water flow throughout the water column more effectively and allows you to run maximum flow rates that are good for minimising dead spots. I like lots of flow in a tank, properly managed of course to prevent excess surface agitation and "blowing" about the plants. I also like to keep the inlet in the same corner as the outlet is this promotes all-round circulation.

for a planted tank, I'd put the bar under the water. one fitted above, would both reduce CO2 and increase O2! Through surface disruption.
