I found a great deal on a 110 gal tank and have been thinking about buying it. It doesnt come with any filters though, he said all he used on it were sponge filters and he would be willing to give those to me as well. I would look at keeping freshwater tropical in it and just wanted to see if a couple sponge filters would actually work on a tank that size or if it would need some other type of filtration method?

I would think that you would need other filtration other than sponge filters. But then it could work aslong as you did more water changes than usual.

It all depends on the size of the sponges and how powerfull your air pump is. I run tanks up to 180 gallons on air powered sponge filters but the ones i use are rated at 100 gallons per sponge and are ran off a 120lph koi pond air pump.
