my lfs has these in and they are very tiny...about half an inch! it says they stay small....i was considering them down the road for a 6 gallon...are these an oddity or fairly common? thanks guys

Hi Ficious :)

I've never seen them at an lfs, but I would buy them in a heartbeat if I did. :D

Obvious they aren't anywhere near as common as most other gourami species but I wouldn't say they were particularly rare.
At work our supplier more often than not has some in stock, although they are generally an under-appreciated fish that doesn't really sell as well as it perhaps should

i agree, my LFS doesnt regularly stock them but could order them no problem...another place i've been to had a tank full of them...

They would probably work in a 6 gallon, i know they would in a 10

We see them in the UK quite often, then for a couple of years dont see them what so ever.

Thier part of the croaking gourami family and when they start croaking it's very strange, esp if ur looking for what the noise is for 20 mins like i was!

yes we do see them in uk occasionally but when lfs gets them in not abig seller

great gourami to keep!!

very placid

and when fully growing lok really nice but when small not much colour to them at all

thanks guys, as soon as i can devote more space to more fish ill make these little guys a home and hope they still have some

these are gorgeous little fish and i would love some for my rio 180 - moving the rice fish out lol
but i cant find them anywhere , think i might get lfs to order them for me

great choice if you can get them hun

I have a few in my 40 breeder and in my 120 community tanks. They do stay quite small for a gourami but much larger than 1/2 inch. Mine seem to run about 1.5 inches as adults. They are delightful little fish.

They are awesome little fish and are my favorite gouramis. I'm waiting for a LFS to get some more in for me. They are not too difficult to find here, but they are seasonal. I forget what season though.....

Theres a short vid in my sig of two sparklers I use to have croaking and doing there dominance ritual. IDK how they make that sound, and I agree with helterskelter. Though I spent a week trying to figure out what it was.......

A week LOL, i was still at home when i had them, and mum was complaining about this noise coming from the tank, so i had to find it, still that was 15 years ago and i still not breed them :(

I've never found a 100% way to sex them as their are very little differance in either colour, finage or size. So u would want a small groupe of 6 fish to make sure i have a pair. they build a bubble nest under submeraged leaf's so plants with a good leaf shape is key so plants like cryptocorine's will be key.

I have no idea how to sex them. I was eventually able to determine that I had at least 2 males and a female in my group of 4, just by watching their behavior. I agree w/ helterskelter, if you get a group you should be good. They are quite sociable little fish. My group spawned once. I was not expecting the young. I had 0% chance of raising them. It was a nano fish community tank, one of them guarded the little fry very well. I didn't have a fry tank and my smallest fry food was vinager eels. Which turned out to be too big for them. None made it past a week. I want to get another group and give it another shot.

Helterskelter! That sound almost drove me out of my mind. The first few days- Hmmmm..... theres a strange noise coming from around the fish tank . Day 6- What the $%@ is that noise?! I spent a couple hours searching......all around the fish tank. I would sit quietly and wait for it................ Then one day I was sitting quietly next to the tank waiting for the noise......... I was watching the fish............Then the sparklers started dancing and croaking..........
