Hi, I am on day 7 of a fishless Cycle and went to top up the Ammo, I noticed a little white thread like thing (5-6mm) thoung it was a hair then it started to squiggle about.

I have found and removed 5 tonight.

I purchased the tank new Oct08 and it was run for 2 months and without too many details I had to empty, disconnect and cleaned, it has been empty and dry for 2 months - so I dont know if they are from the last use or something new.

Any ideas anybody?

260L
Amm was 0ppm now topped to 5ppm
Nitrite 5ppm
Nitrate 80+ppm
ph 7.5

Hmm. could be, the article mentions Sterazin which I have - think I will ask around to see if this will affect the new Cycle the bottle does state that it doesn't hurt the bacteria......

I feel like dosing the tank with - Sterazin, Parazin and WS4 at the same time - but that Im sure would bu66er the Cycle!

Cheers for the link.

Just read a topic on Nematodes! but it didn't give a good description of them, can anybody describe them please.

I would leave the tank for now, it just might of been a one off.

Hi, the link said it could be caused from high ammonia levels - I am Cycling so I presume 5ppm is high.

I would just carry on with the cycle and just keep a look out.

Sorry just noticed there was five on them not one.
If you removed them I would just keep a close eye for anymore.
I would just carry on with the fishless cycle for now.

I live near doncaster.

Yeah I sucked them out with the Ammonia syringe and gave them an overdose Ha Ha.

I am in Donny - Armthorpe.

That's not far from me then lol. About 10 to 15 minutes away.

Hi, something new in my tank now - 3mm white bugs different to the ones floating around as they are fatter and on the glass pic attached -

I have a link for the full size image here - ttp://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww322/paulbroughuk/3mmbugs8mar09.jpg

I am getting a little worried as I am Cycling and now have two different types of bugs in there - should I be worried or will my new fish just eat them?

The critters in the last pic are planaria...harmless. Usually caused by overfeeding/dirty water. Give them a good gravel vac...

Hi, cheers for the name, but my tank has no food and is clean - 10 days into a clean fishless cycle!

I will keep my eyes on it and if they grow in numbers I will post again.

Hi Paul,

I had planaria appear during my fishless cycle and have since interacted with dozens and dozens of beginners who get it during fishless cycling. In every case I've seen its been totally harmless and gone long before fish go in. I think of it now as just one of those things, like bacterial blooms and unusual fungus growths on bogwood, that happen early on either from the excess ammonia or the newness of the tank or both.

The article that Wilder linked is interesting though, in case it were to become an issue later!
