Something Very Wrong With Store Fish!

I went to pets at home last night where I got my first platys and the fish looked in a terrible state
the red tip sharks were faded and their were several platy and others that were struggling to swim upwards and were just laying on the gravel
and most strangely of all the goldfish were all facing down in the tank and swimming in place all facing the same direction as if watching tv or something...
and there was a whole section not for sale because they were undergoing treatment and they actually looked the healthiest of the lot!

needless to say we didnt get any fish from here last night

But I'm just curious what could be wrong with them??

could be poor water or a disease in the tanks

lol i never ever by fish from pets at home wen i used to they always died that night or the next day

I actually really liked pets at home as it was where I got my first tropicals,
just a shame its not been great lately cos its the only place open when I finish work.

The worse thing about it tho was the manager, there's usually some really great staff there, really helpful
I bought a plant from a tank and in the process of her getting it to the till she didn't check there was no fish in it and ended up killing a leopard molly, bless it

The fish in my Pets at Home all looked quite healthy but then last week they annoyed me by selling a goldfish to a bloke and his kids when you could SEE the brand new tank and equipment in their trolly!


and it was a bright pink novelty one

ive had a couple of plecs which I still have! I would buy more but they are overpriced now!

I buy fish from pets at home and they do fine. I've lost a few but there is such thing as keeper error. And sure, pets at home look after 1000s of fish in each store. Course they are going to lose some or occasinally get it wrong.

Also you have to remember they do not specialise in fish they have other pets to worry about aswell. Thats what i think

It was actually pets at home I got most of my advice from, I went in to buy a goldfish and they wouldnt sell me one without a filter,
I had plenty of goldfish just in bowls when I was younger so I didnt really think I needed anything for them but they did help me alot in the end

Yup I totally agree, Just curious as to what would cause the fish to behave the way they were

They're probably the same as any place. They'll all have better staff than others. The fish so look well cared for in there. I saw one that looked sick but in that many tanks you can let them off.

Not that I'm 100% what I'm looking for. I'll have to check that before I get my fish.

It depends on the individual store I think,we have been to two separate pets at home stores in the same town.One of them had staff who gave atrocious advice,mis-sold us fish resulting in a death and re homing and yet the one on the other side of town couldn't be more helpful and knowledgeable.Its safe to say which one we prefer!!

I was actually looking for a forum that compares local shops too, think it would be a really good idea
like which ones are helpful, good value for money, stock different types of fish etc

By coinsidence, I was a bit concerned at the state of the fish in the Southampton Pets at Home and Tropi-quaria today. They both had several fish groups that looked really pale, including Rummynose Tetras (with only ~2 in the group of ~50 looking bright red).

By contrast, the fish at Aquajardin looked terrific yesterday, really glad I came across their existance by chance while "interwebbing" on Tuesday night!
