littlefishie- I'm an operatic tenor... need tips? I've heard some dreadful voices become great... they didn't have high notes either!

Mm, I think it's just that I overwork my vocal chords before trying the higher ones.. ever heard the aria in 'Think of Me' from Phantom of the Opera? That's what I've been practicing.. I get the whole aria except that one shattering note before she goes back down the scale..

Not to mention attempting some of the other, more complicated stuff. I think I warm up too much.

Any ideas?

do your warmups in the shower so you can stretch your vocal cords further? probably all the tips we can give, you've already heard--seeing as you want to properly sing opera. ;) (personally, i always wanted to play meg's part. i love the intro bit she's got for "Angel of Music")

you'll have to grant me an update when i get back from spring break. (i'm being forced to go to a cabin in an internet-forsaken bit of backwoods :rip:-->me for four days)

First of all... You can't really warm-up too much. Do you take lessons? It sounds like you are doing something wrong with your voice. When you try to sing the high note, do you feel loose? The #1 obstacle for singers and high notes is tension. Tension can be found many places, the jaw, breath, neck, etc... Try to sing the high note softly without any tension.

Secondly- Phantom of the Opera is not an opera  (but that's another topic) I don't know where you live, but I will be singing in an opera in Cleveland, Ohio next month and I am usually in New York...
If this is something you are serious about, maybe I can help you find a good teacher.

Heh, tension is definitely gonna be it for me then.. stress like you wouldn't believe. ;) I haven't taken lessons since 12th grade, so last year.. my music teacher is an amazing singer, she's the one that brought me to concerts across Canada to perform with our high school band.. it was so fun. I think that, besides the tension, maybe I'm not letting myself try hard enough? ..Paper thin walls in rez.. I'd hate to try, and be loud, and have my neighbours think someone was killing me rather than hit the proper note. And I live about ten minutes from Niagara Falls, Ont.. so right across from Niagara Falls, NY.

I know it's not an opera. ;) But it's the only kind that doesn't make my housemates want to plug their ears. ..I just treat the aria in Think of Me as opera because it's similar to some of the things I've found in real operas.. and probably the closest I can attempt while living in rez.

I do sing in the shower, lots.. but I have to stop, my neighbours complain that I'm too loud. Not bad, just loud. And Meg's part is awesome, Pica.. I love the whole 'I only wish I knew your secret/Who is your new teacher?' ..so pretty.

And yes, several updates for you! :) Have fun in the woods, I'll be looking for you on AIM in 4 days. Good luck surviving with no 'net and no TFF. ;)

I love quilting but I am afraid of my mom's sewing machine. So I do it by hand and always end up quitting early or just making mini quilts. I have great respect for anyone who can make a full-sized quilt. (I am jumpy about getting my fingers that close to a fast moving needle. I just KNOW I am going to sew myself to the quilt.)

Put the machine on slow and make sure you use a quilting foot to piece it together [it gives you the proper seam allowance], and then a walking foot when quilting the top, batting, and back together.
Then it's a lot easier. ;)

The one I'm doing by hand has been in the works for about a year and it's barely half done.. it takes forever.
My machine quilted one was done in about a month, I think.. I can't remember.
