Some People Just Dont Listen

in my lfs today i say a woman with 2 kids buyin a fish bowl about 3g with no fillter or evan air pump and i heard them say what they wanted to get 1 shbubkin 1 shara comet and a yellow and red goldfish so i thought i would say to her theres no fillter on the tank and the tanks not evan sutible for one of them fish let alone 4 they all need huge tanks or ponds with really good fillters and she said they only grow to the size of the tank and i said thats a load of rubbish it stunts them and kills them and she said oh well they look nice and just went ahead a brought all 4 of them some people just shouldnt be alowed to keep fish

we cant convert them all, but when she runs into problems im sure she`ll remember what you told her, most of us started off with fishbowls, i know i did,its only wanting to do it differently/properly, that stopped us, im sure she`ll learn when shes watched the kids breaking there hearts over countless dead goldies

I agree...it's a shame, but we've all done it wrong before we knew any better.

Had a tank when I was younger with filter, light, pump, etc, but had one cory, one tetra and a couple of guppies...poor fish

Shame on the lfs though for selling it to her in the first place! First time I went into mine as soon as I said 'new' tank I was interrogated with questions about it...

Hopefully a lesson will be learned from this.

the people at the lfs say they grow to the size of the tank so she probly just thought he knows more than me i made the mistake of listening to them and ive gt a 10cm shbubkin in a 30l biord that i was told grow to the size of the tank last summer im giving it to my mums friend when it gets a little warmer they got a pond 10m 4m by 2m pond so at least it will have a good home i just wish some one had told me defore i got it

Some people just don't see fish as pets.. more just decoration so don't give a crap what happens to them.

thats a common myth ( that they grow to the size of the tank) they actually stop growing but their internal organs dont, so they dont live a decent life,probably painfull if anything, why dont you see if you can trade your fish at the store for something more suitable, expalin whats happend ( got bad advice) and they may be willing to help, though if they dont then a filtered pond is a great idea.
lots of lfs/stores give stinking advice its a sad fact, maybe you could mention the forum if you see/hear another unsure customer, i do, and people are usually glad of the advice...
people also like when advice is given in such a way that they think its their own choice... "i was going to get one of those they are beautiful arnt they, the only thing that stopped me was the fact that ..blah blah.. they get this big, they are this messy"
pull them into conversation, and tell them all about what you have and ask about theres, with a smile not everyone will listen but 1 out of 10 might and thats a start

yh i wish i knew about the stunting thing before i brought them and i only found out when i found this forum
its anoying because this lfs has quite good quality fish but none of them have a clue about the fish theyve sold me leopard plecs and fetherfin catfish to go in a 54l tank and told me it was more than big enough so now if im thinking of buying somethink i ask on hear and dont listen to anythink they say

the best thing you could do is decide on the fish you want, then ask on here.. no one has anything to gain from advising you, only to make you and the fish happy ( though no one on here will ever be accused of telling you what you want to hear ), unlike at some lfs where money is all they are after.

anything at all your not sure about, ask here, you`ll get lots of opinions,advice,most of it from personal experience

dont beat yourself up over the goldfish, weve all done it

not all fish shops are bad, just a handfull, and when you got to grips with fishkeeping you`ll be able to smell them a mile off

yh i always ask on the forum now just so i dont get anythink like that heppen again
a couple of days ago i was askin them to order in cockatoo apisto and he was sayin he dont think they could got in my 54l tank with platys but trying to sell me kribs luckly i know how big they get and just went nah i think the cockatoos will be ok

kribs get quite aggressive when they have babies ( not really community fish), so well done on you, im not sure about the cockatoos, im almost sure they are quite peacefull, but it wont hurt to double check, on compatibilty and tank size your very enthusiastic and thats lovely to see, so keep up the good work

i started a topic in the cichlid section and they all said the min tank size is 38l for a breeding par and there fine in a comunity tank aslong as u have enough hiding places

lol, but you are forgetting this happens in thousands of households in the uk alone its the lfs's, but they are all money grabbing loonies

when a fish's growth is slowed, because of in correct housing, the body stops growing, and so do the organs. they dont get crushed up inside, its a myth...have you ever seen a fish with swollen insides because the organs are too big for the fish?

there is no science to explain that the organs carry on growing.

so you are saying that its ok to stunt fish, if they are not effected?
