my wife to be was ok with me getting the first tank now i get grief whenever i even so much as look at the tank!!

if i gotta go food shopping she goes "dont even think about going in that fish shop!!" or "if you come back with a fish, so help me god..."

Well not exactly my parent, but my "other half":

Me: Could I possibly squeeze in a smallish tank (unspecified exact size!) onto your desk?
Him: (Absentmindedly) yeah sure whatever
Me: (run out to get a nice little conservative 10Gal setup)
Him: Oh that's quite small -_-
Me: (take that as a sign to get a bigger one, so run out to get a nice little 20Gal setup)
Him: Oh  that's rather big !

Another conversation:
Him: that tank looks quite empty
Me: yes, I'm moving some fish in there soon
Him: You're spending too much money on fish

Men!

I think my parents have given up. They used to compliment my fish, say it's a healthy hobby, and then gripe like no tomorrow whenever I got something new... now they're just like "Oh, another betta... how pretty. Where are you going to squeeze THAT one in?" :p

Mrs my mom has the same type of problem, "Stick with what you have." My dad on the other hand is very different. He under stands when I return fish, and when I buy new ones. Plus he gives his opinon on the style of the tank, its nice.

Lol bloozoo... get a 15 gallon!

Very funny peoples, I don't really have parents like that... but my mom is a biologist.
Sometimes we go to the lfs and mom's like:
Oooh that one's so CUTE! Let's get it! (e.g. tiny little loaches that bury themselves and only eat live worms)
No, mom, they're too hard to keep!
Oooh that one's pretty! We should buy that one!
No, mom, it gets too big! Plus it eats plants!
Now I have a 10 gallon stocked over the top with mom's pretty fish, tetras, cories, guppies, cae's, catfish, barbs... Lol, nammuch I can do about it! It's her money.

LOL, I know the feeling. Fish my mum has suggested would look nice in my 15 gallon (and my 3 gallons) include-
Silver sharks
Angels
Goldfish
Mixed mbuna cichlids
Common plecs
CAE's
And others I can't remember... Although I'm currently hinting that breeding bettas would be a nice little project/money earner....

you should tell your parents that they should get themselves a tank and stock it with the fish, of course it must be the correct size. so then you may be able to get a nice large tank.

They're not interested. I wouldn't give them the responsibility, considering dad believes water changes are unecessary and neither knows anything about fish..... Plus there's no room. Although I'm working on starting to spread the fishyness downstairs. My first target is..... getting a betta on the mantlepiece :)

You wouldn't give your parents the responsibility - tee hee, bit of a role reversal there, no? :D
My dad thinks is wierd and claims that they are "pretend children" and "never mind breeding the fish, what about you?" (charming turn of phrase, no?). He's badly smitten with grandchild number 1 (spawn of sister), and well used to being ignored by me by now.

I have different stories between my dad, my mom, and my brother....

My dad - Tara, you have too many tanks in your room...you need to stop buying all these fish tanks, I can't afford the water bill!
Me - Well I don't plan on getting anymore, most of them are just 1 gallon tanks anyway.
My dad - Well if you get anymore, the floor will colapse!

And here's one with my brother....

My brother - Why do you have so many fish?
Me - umm cuz I like fish
my brother - Well you really need to get out and do something, all you do is clean fish tanks all the time
Me - Mind your own business.

And here's another one from my brother....

(The tank he's talking about has one 2" jack dempsey and a B-nose plec in it)

My brother - Why do you have one small fish in there?
me - Well, it won't be small after it grows more, it's still little right now
my brother - still....your tank looks bare. Add more fish.
me - no
my brother - yes (then he walks out of my room )

And this is between my mom and I after I got my first tank...

My mom - Those are pretty fish, I like those!
Me - Yah, I like them too.
My mom - what kind of fish are they?
me - guppy's and platies
my mom - aww, I want some
Me - well, I have an extra 20 gallon you can have
my mom - aww thanks hunny :*) Where am I gonna put it though?
me - on your dresser in your room
my mom - ok! :D

She was so happy that she was able to have fish.

But a few weeks after that convo with my mom, she was drinking with a couple other people here at the house, and I got mad from being annoyed by them so I kinda yelled at them, then my mom got mad at me and broke the 20 gallon I gave her
So then we apologized to eachother the next day and she went out and bought a 15 gallon, which is in her room now (and looks terrible! all colorful fake plants). She also bought the wrong fish, but both of us didn't know about them until I joined this forum. Back when I had one of my 10 gallons set up, I had 2 I.D sharks in it  So as soon as I found out about them, I gave mine to a friend who has a 90 gallon tank (still too small for them, but it's better then living in a 10 gallon)
So I told my mom about them, but she didn't want to get rid of it, as a matter of fact, she still has the poor thing :-(

I think i'll stop now, my post is getting pretty long. Sorry about that :p

My parents are no problem at all, as I don't live with them, but I do have the dreaded resident girlfriend. I'm still trying to convince her that my planned 100g corner tank won't look too big in our bedroom, or be too much maintainance along with the 50g in the living room, or the 15g upstairs.... :D

Nik

my point exactly :D but you've gotta remember, she's female, a notoriously fickle species ;) I think I'll just tell her she can have another Betta in it, that should be a winner.

Woo Im lucky, mum will take me to the LFS whenever I ask her and spend as long as I like there, she seems very interested by the fish, and sometimes sits in my room watching them.

I paid for the tank myself, but she wont accept money for any of the fish I get or the food, so thats about £60 so far.

My dads also really interested in them and comes to watch them now and then.

Mum keeps telling me to get a massive marine set-up, even though I tell her it will cost about £3000
