I got this rainbow a while ago, as an accidental purchase it snuck in with some Pacific Blue Eyes and I actually have no idea which species of rainbow fish it is. Since putting in one of my 4ft tanks it has got really big and starting to show much more colour

Today I purchased some other Rainbows, sadly once again no idea which exact species they are, or even if they are some hybrid, but my existing rainbow seems quite attracted to one of the new ones and was displaying to it.

The two Rainbows that I was able to identify where a couple of Boeseman Rainbows which I was really chuffed to find let alone get. Now to wait for them to mature and really show their true beauty.

Hopefully in time they will also be more co-operative in the photography department.

I feel your pain re getting rainbowfish photos. Mine never stay still long enough for me to get anything beyond a blurry picture.

I think the two unidentified fish you have are a variant of Melanotaenia splendida (possibly inorta or fluviatilis), and a juvenile male M. trifasciata. Both look amazing once they colour up!

The biggest problem is they could really be almost any native rainbow and because they most likely came from a fish farm there is every chance that they are hybrids. There is always the chance too that the largest original rainbow is a Dawson River Rainbow, which is what I am leaning towards, but far more likely to be M. splendida which is endemic to my area.
Either way I am sure they will look stunning once they mature and really come into their own.

Try using " sports " or " continuous " mode on your camera you should find it in the settings. That's the mode people use when they take photos of race cars and such , focus just in front of the fish click the button and it will take a series of shots as the fish swims by. Then you upload the best 1. That's the simple explanation to find out how to do this on any camera look at the instruction book for that model.
