right now i have a tank that has some nice looking fish, but unfortunately the scenery is very very boring. i have a few rocks, 1 dying elodea and a bit of java moss. i have noticed that there are some very nice tanks out there that are very nice looking, especially being planted. so i was wondering what would be good to start out with?

Need some tank specs to begin with pal.

Size of tank, measurments.
Light
Any CO2?
Any ferts?
General maintenance
How many fish
What sort of filter

unless you have a load of cash laying around for a co2 kit, ferts and an expencive substrate, i would recommend that you try out the less demanding plants.

try amazon swords ludwigia, cabomba and cryptocorene,

30 g
about 10 fish, danios, barbs, angels, 1 cory, swordtails and a dwarf gourami
change media every 2 weeks, water change every other 2 weeks.
aqua clear 40-70 gallon filter
nothing else really applies

Do you mean you change your filter media EVERY 2 weeks. As in you put new filter media in every 2 weeks?

Am i reading this right......

every changed after being cleaned 2 times which would be after 6 weeks or so

Well, you dont need to change the filter media unless it's filter floss. Otherwise its a waste of money potentially dangerous by removing nitrifying bacteria.
What about lighting? (this is key in order to determine whether CO2 or regular nutrient dosing is neccasary).

called a marineland natural daylight. when i clean the media i only clean the mechanical (there are 3 stages) which has pretty much just fish crap in it, but i almost never change the whole filter

I second RadaR. You don't need to replace filter media at all as it houses your bacteria, replacing the media even after 6 weeks is pretty pointless and your just throwing away good bacteria and starting over every 6 weeks. I've had the media in my filter for 5 years. I give it a light rinse in tank water once a month and its good to go again. The only media you may need to replace as he says is your initial filter layer of wool/floss which can be severely clogged, and/or any media such as activated carbon (which i think is pointless anyway), but they are optional extra medias you can buy. Most filters don't have them in as standard.

I've never changed any media in my life. I've added in some filter wool from Wilkos on occasion but the media that came with the filter is always the media that dies with the filter :)

anymore suggestions? i have one elodea plant (it's dying, i think i need either co2 or fert but not sure which one) and some okay growing java moss. these are the only plants ive had in my tank. theyve been in there since may.

1 elodea and moss doesn't need fert or Co2.

The suggestions above are pretty accurate. Ferns, anubias, crupts, swords, mosses, virtually all you will see in an LFS is fine for a low light tank.

however whilst you tell us what the light is you haven't told us what it gives. We need the type (T5, T5HO, LED, etc) and the wattage
