I don't know if this belongs here, but I just wanted to ask you guys for advice according to your experiences in the following fishes:

dwarf gourami
glass fish
neon glolight
rummy nose

Here's the situation:
I'm planning to buy a 30-35 gallon tank. I'm going to keep about 9-10 adult guppies in there. Might also put a trio of platies, and occasionally keep some older fry prior to sale. It's going to be bare bottom, although I can put some decorations like hideouts, plants and rocks.

I want to add another species to the tank. I am attracted to the four that I enumerated above. I don't know much about them, though I read up some in the net. Will they all do well in my setup? A minimum of how many and what sex need to be kept together? As for dwarf gouramis in particular, will they likely eat older fry/young guppies when they get bigger?

I can only comment on two species, and neither is very encouraging.

Dwarf gouramies are very hardy--if you can find healthy stock, or are willing to buy them sick and medicate. Most stock comes from fish farms, and they tend to have parasites and other health issues. The females can be difficult to find--they are plainer colored than the males and seldom offered for sale. A pair of males should be okay, but they are territorial, so this won't always work. a male and a trio of females is the best mix--once more, if you can find the females. It is important not to feed them too much protient--they are herbivores, and can become canstipated if given meaty foods too frequently. That said, they will snack on fry, as will just about all medium to large sized fish.

Glass fish can be tough to find that look good. They are prone to a viral infection that resembles columnaris. It's not contagious to other fish, but makes them look like they have clumps of cauliflower. These usually go away--similar to cold sores, they show up when the fish are stressed and then go away. They do best in groups of at least 6, and there is some indication that low levels of salt are beneficial to their long term health. Don't think they would eat too many of the fry, but it is definitely a possibility.

Thanks, ChasingPuck. I did more research and I've scratched of the Rummy nose (too sensitive), and most likely the glass fish (was going to put them in a small tank just to keep my bumblebee gobies company, but turns out they school in groups so the tank would end up overcrowded.

So I'm seriously thinking about dwarf gouramis, I saw some in the store today and they were just beautiful! I wasn't even thinking about them before that, but they turned my head and I asked the clerk what they were. Also, the more I read about them, the better I like them, though as you mentioned, the lack of availability of females could be a problem. Would they be miserable if I keep only one male per tank with other kinds of fish? Fry I'm not so worried about anymore, I thought before they grew up to 4 inches, but turns out they're only 2.5, so I think they probably (I hope!) will not eat fishes that are already an inch or more...Right?

Glowlights look good to me, too. :)

i have a dawrf gormi? which is fine, it eats flake food and balck larvi and looks fine and has never been ill. I have very small fish (1cm) in the tank with it and it doesn't even llok at them

Thanks, fishlover, that makes me breathe a little easier. :)
