I have been keeping a close eye on my breeding pair of German Blue Rams lately as I am pretty sure they are just about ready to breed, the female has her breeding tube right out so it is very visible and the male is keeping very close to her making sure no-one gets too close for comfort.

Anyway, today when I was doing my weekly water change I was swishing the pipe around picking up all the poop and when I got to a certain area (planted with a big pebble) the rams - but the female in particular - starting pecking at me and got really angry at me being there! After that they kept following my hand around trying to stop me from going back to that spot. Do you think they have chosen that place to lay their eggs? I couldn't see any today, and I haven't noticed them rubbing anywhere yet so I don't think they have bred just yet.

The other day they were butting heads and chasing about but the female didn't seem to like it, I haven't seen them try again since. How long do you think it will be before they breed?

I would like it if you try not to clean the gravel in water changes just empty the water out and clean the glass with a magnetic algae scruder as this wouldnt really intrude on the rams :good:

Sounds like they are about to breed, my fire mouths did the same when they bred... I would suggest you just leave them to it :)

I think I've ruined it :( the female hasn't got her breeding tube out anymore and they aren't sticking as closely together as they were before. Will they try again or is that it?

They'll try again, don't worry. Do you have a flat stone with a large leaf plant next to it? These are their favorite spots to breed. The plant can be real or fake, so long as a leaf hangs over the stone.

Yeah that is where I think they were setting up shop before I went and stressed them out! It's a large flat pebble with Anubias hanging over it from where it is attached to my bogwood. Do you think it will take them long?
And also, if they do manage go protect the eggs from my other fish, what is the likelihood that they will eat them themselves?!
