Snail Problems

I think the snail eating snail is called the Assassin Snail ?

I'm still cycling my tank but have at least 7 snails now, even though I have put no food in there at all!

Ive also got loads of snails but they look as though they are keeping my tank clean!

Are they a real problem? other than eating all my plants?

Am i ok to just lift them out and bin (as i dont want to flush them now i read they will upset local eco systems)

cheers

Lou

You can get a anti snail solution that kills them from the pet shop , If that is the road you want to go down , I still have loads of snails but I got clown loaches so that a stable source of protien for them :)

id say dont use any type of chemicals to kill snails its gonna ruin your tank, also the easiest most humane way is to lure em onto a bit of lettuce or cucumber and they either squish em or put em in the bin, you should NEVER release anything from your aquarium into your local water courses, or flush it down the loo for that matter.

when will ppl stop saying fish only grow to the size of the tank its so wrong

Hi Alley,
good to see someone "local"...im in albany  Do you not like the snails? are they disturbing the levels in your tank? If you dont really mind them (meaning, if they arent casuing TONS of ammonia, although i know they cause tons of poop and cleaning) just let them be. I know it seems you have millions but there is only so much food for them to eat in there. their population is self-limiting. you will still have the occasional explosion in population but many will not survive- there is only so much food in there for them to eat.
if you do want to rid them, and dont want to use chmicals (i wouldnt want to) get a small clown loach, let him eat the snails, them once he's done his duty, return him...kinda like a renter.
also, a good fresh water rinse of your new live plants in the future will help control this kind of thing in the future (just make sure you dip it in DECHLORINATED water after the rinse under tap water before you put them in the tank.
good luck neighbor!

i personally wouldn't advise even 'renting' a clown loach as you put it, they are sensitive fish so require stable conditions and not being swapped from one tank to another
