Smoking

thanks for all the comments guys!

there seems to be mixed feelings on this subject! my boyfriend has said he'll stop smoking in the house, better to be safe than sorry i think! and my house will smell nicer! gonna wash all my curtains, cushion covers etc now! should keep me busy for a bit! lol!

Thank you nevergone for a sensible breakdown of possible effects of smoking on fish...

My God, I can't believe this topic was actually even started. Yes, the possibility exists that it may effect the water, but unless the air is so thick with smoke you can not see, I can not imagine it would be enough to do any damage.

And again as nevergone said, what about all aerosols? What about cooking?

exactly, EVERYTHING will put harmful toxins and fumes into the air, so you can't just blame smokers for problems.

and cutie mcwhiskers its great that your boyfriend has agreed to smoke outside. this will clear up your house of smoke and make it smell better. he seems like a class guy. keep him  ! and YES it is better to be safer than sorry

It would be interesting to find out, although ive packed in fags now (with baby on way and all) I did used to smoke pretty much right next to two of my tanks (one by the PC and one by the sofa) and often wondered.

My dalmation used to be addicted to nicotine aqnd had to be weaned off when i first got her.

I've wondered about this in passing, as I smoke in the lounge which is where my fish live.

Perhaps it has a negative effect, I can't imagine it's going to be that much of a problem.

I've decided that I'm going to carry on smoking, but to be extra careful not to drop ash off the end of my fag into the tank when conducting water changes.

I smoked while doing water changes in that I would take a break part way through and have a fag but not actually have one while in the process of doing a water change.....thats mad heh heh heh.

Im just imagining Dot Cotton water changing a tank now.

I thought at 6 foot four I was the tallest on the forum but I doff my cap sir.

I should start a who's the tallest thread, that would be interesting.....you could be in with a chance big man.

We could have "Who's the fattest?" and "Who's the ugliest".....well maybe not.

something else to be considered is this: secod hand smoke is mostly carbon monoxide.

Carcenogenic materials from cigerettes is mostly the tar put in them (the number one cause of smoking related lung cancer) and other chemicals.

The carbon monoxide from smoking is about that in the lungs of a smoker as that which is emitted from an average family car.however, once disperesed into the air, it is such small quantities that it becomes background negligible. although, whilst actually smoking, a higher amount is obviously there.

Having a greater amount of carbon monoxide in the air would not be good but at the same time, the surface of the water is not likely to absorb a greater amount unless injected into it. On the other side, it would also hamper exchange for oxygen as there would be less oxygen content in that particular air space, if left open to your smoking.

my opinion anyway.

andim a smoker, and do think that it will have some effect on the fish tank, however i feel that those levels are almost pointless to consider.

Second hand smoke not only consists of the smoke coming out of a smokers lungs (Bad), but also from the lit end of the cigarette, the end with no filter (Very bad). There isn't an extreme amount of that getting onto the air, but it is far more dangerous than what is inhaled and exhaled by the smoker.

I don't smoke, I just have a health education class :p

And applying this to pet health and possible illnesses/death, it's not a matter of "it hasn't happened", or "it's never happened to me", it's more of a better safe than sorry thing :)

I WIN , I WIN , I WIN

But seriously, I used to have a ciggy while i waited for my water tests to develop in the kitchen( no smoking in the living room) and i noticed very different results in the nitrate/nitrite and pH tests until I started capping the test tubes

Draw your own conclusions..........................

ok i'm purely inquisitive, if say you were smoking a little somthing a slightly more exotic than cigaretes do you think this would have any effect?? :look:
