hi,

just wondering if cigarette smoke can affect your tank? i dont smoke but my boyfriend does and i've often wondered what affect, if any, the smoke could be having on fish? he's not a heavy smoker and probably has 3 or 4 a night in the living room, which is where the tank is, but as its cold none of the windows are open and the living room door is kept shut most of the time to keep the heat in but i wouldn't say it gets very smokey in there.

does anyone have any opinions on this?

Absolutely. Of course it gets absorbed. I recently picked up a second hand tank from someone and it "stank" to high heavens  , it was quite disgusting. So just imagine.....

I am a smoker (wish I wern't) and I've not experianced any health issues with any pet that I've owned that can be directly linked to "secondary/passive" smoking.

so do you think it would be best if he didnt smoke in there or if we just keep the door open to let the air circulate?

To be honest, it would be best of he could smoke outside (if you have that authority ?! ). Not quite the same, but I used to live with someone who smoke a packet a day and my poor cat had ranging eye infections non stop. He had several specialist eye tests etc. and lotions and potions, but nothing helped. I had to de-crust his eyes every single morning so that he could see properly :/ Once we move out, and within a week, it cleared up and has been gone forever.

tsk tsk tsk sam. admitting to smoking something maybe not so legal on a public message board  who really cares though.

anyways, i personally don't smoke but my parents do and in my ENTIRE life NONE of our animals, including fish have appeared to suffer from the second hand smoke.

it may be best to smoke with a window or door open or outside for the sake of not risking it and the fact that your house will smell a lot fresher and cleaner. since we moved, my parents started smoking outside when warm and with windows open when cold, and boy is there a difference!

Well you will all quit sometime if you get the chance before it kills you. My grandpa quit when he had no choice unless he wanted a huge hole in his nose. Another guy I know is going to be on an oxygen tank for the rest of his life if he keeps smoking the way he does and he's only 42 and at 45 he will always have to have an oxygen tank to live. He smokes a new cigarette every 5 minutes or around there. And I would suggest trying to stop because my grandpas life was shortened because he had cancer and all his fish suffered bad.
