Slate and Marble Aquisition

Just got a 70UK Gallon tank, and was going to make some caves etc out of slate. Wasn't sure where to get it, as I didn't fancy paying a fortune.

Just phoned a local fireplace manufacturer, and they say they have buckets and buckets of slate and marble I can come and have for free.

The reason for this post is twofold:

1. To ask whether marble OK for the tank, or is it Calcium based and likely to mess with pH?

2. To share the advice that you don't need to buy slate, you should phone your local fireplace makers!

Marble. Do not use!
As marble is a metamorphosed limestone and is composed of fairly pure calcite, it is very dangerous to be used in an aquarium.

Marble is the name given to any limestone that can be polished to a shine.
