Single Specimen Tank - Recommendations.

Hi There,

I have a well decorated and planted 2ft x 1ft tank winding down and I'd like to put a single fish in it for a change (it's had just Guppies in it until now )

Can anyone recommend anything? I've been looking at Cichlids but they tend to be destructive and the tank is on the small side anyway.

a nice pair of dwarf cichlids
like apistogramma cacatuoides

whats to total water volume in there you could do a wet pet puffer fish maybe? Depends on volume though could get something interesting in there though.

Cichlid wise as said the only ones suitable are the south american dwarfs and if you did them in that tank you should still be able to have a few more fish with them.

I was thinking of a very colourful cichlid but I'm open to suggestions.

Personally I find it more interesting with several species...maybe two would be better than one, but then again its personal opinion.
Heres my recommendation:
-5 Aequidens dorsigerus
-5 Apistogramma cacatuoides
-or 10 Aphyosemion striatum

Look these fish up...theyre pretty cool

I have to disagree with you on cichlids I cant comment on the killifish as I have no experience but are you really suggesting 5 A.Cacatuoides and 5 A.Dorsigerus (Its actually Laetacara Dorsiger but yeah) that would be such a cramped tank 5 of the Dorsiger would be too much in the tank let alone the 5 cacatuoides.

To the original poster - while the two cichlids mentioned above are suitable the numbers are crazy all that would happen is the alpha male apistogramma cacatuoides would make the other fishes lives miserable and could quite easily kill them outright. If you do decide to go with one of these species tell us and either me or one of the other people that have kept these fish will be able to help you decide on species and numbers.

Sorry to do this yet again but have to disagree, pictus are schooling/gregarious fish that need to be in at least trios get to 4-5 inches each and are way to active to go in the 2 foot tank, butterfly fish perhaps but again as adults 4 inch fish in a 2 foot tank.... paradise fish maybe but again size...

Sorry to keep doing this but its happening a lot over and over recommendations of unsuitable fish in numerous threads. Its all from newish members that dive into threads faster than is humanly possible and its going to damage this forums reputation really badly if it continues. Mods Im kind of using this thread as an example but you have to be aware of whats going on sorry if this offends any of the new members but I had to say it somewhere.

I have to confess to being a tad confused now.

Ideally I'd like to put a Cichlid in there on it's own that won't grow too big.

are African Blockheads a good idea? apologies if this is a daft question.

Sorry to have messed your thread like that above it just ended up being a rant sorry.

I would agree with the fish that Davo listed the blockheads would work pretty nice as a species tank in there
