I have 6 tanks in my room and they all have filters that are silent but they all make the water 'swish' (couldnt think of a word) and i just got used to them. I also my room is on the side of the house that the main road is so i get loads of bus noise along with the water when im going to sleep. Really unless its up againsed wood and making that annoying big rumble noise you will really get used to it quickly.

As mentioned, the air pump isn't really necessary. I don't run any on my tanks except for the 5 gallon and it's just to help keep a film on the water broken up (long story, but my tap water will film over after a couple days). I have 4 Rena air pumps and they are indeed dead silent unless they aren't sitting level and vibrating. Otherwise, you would never know they are running.
