Hello all:

I have a 110 gallon tank in which I keep African Cichlids. I have one large male (approx. 6 inches) that suddenly became ill. He seems to be unable to maintain his buoyancy and even has trouble remaining upright. Does anyone know what this might be and what if anything can be done? I've had to separate him from the others as they were relentlessly attacking him. If I can't help him, I'll have to euthanize him.

Thanks!

Probably a swim bladder issue, possibly Malawi bloat or constipation. What do you feed them and how often? Do you know what species he is and can you post a pic or two?

For now I would keep him warm, maybe up the temp a couple degrees, and try adding some epsom salts to his water. I personally would add about half a teaspoon for 5 gallons. What size hospital tank/bucket do you have him in? Don't forget to keep his water aerated, if you have an established sponge wither that would be perfect>

Here's link that might help with adding epsom salt
