i woke up this morning, to find my acara quite quiet at the bottom of the tank after further inspection i have saw that just behind his gills on his fins their are small red marks, like small cuts. no other fish seem to have this problem and i did a water change yesterday, this tank has been established now for well over a year, with no losses. i believe the culprit maybe my yo yo loach as it often harrases the fish just behind the gills. anyone have any idea what this is and the best coarse of action. i believe i will be removing the yo yo loach soon.

thanks

It is possible with the loach, as these fish need to be kept in groups. This is odd behavior for a yoyo loach, but may be due to this. Make sure there are a couple of small caves for the loach, they do like to hide.

I keep groups of yoyo loachs with angels and have no problems, and am reasonably sure I could put the group in with my lone acara without a problem. The key is group, they do develop a pecking order, I imagine a lone yoyo might show some odd sort of dominance with other fish.

i do have a group of 5 clown loaches, would this help?

also can i add anything to the water to make sure the cuts don't get infected?

Best thing I've found for injured fish, or all fish in general is fresh water. I've had some pairs of angels form, and get really nasty with other angels before I had a chance to intervene. 50% daily water changes for a week, every other day for the second week helped more than adding anything to the water. Melafix is often suggested for injured fish, but I've seen no difference using it or not.

Clowns & yoyos are different species, the usual social pecking order won't form with the lone yoyo.

after research i think it may be a case of gill flukes. i have dosed the tank and someone told me that turning the heat up to around 29 c will help.
