Hi,

I hope I've posted this in the correct forum.

I'm a newcomer to the hobby.
My tank is a 90 ltr (30" x 15" x 12") and is currently stocked with 10 neon tettras but I am thinking of adding 4 platties and maybe moving 3 balloon mollies from my smaller 60 ltr tank in there too.
My LFS has had a male siamese fighting fish in a tank with some other fish (not sure what) for a good few months now and i want it.
It's a gorgeous deep red colour with flowing fins and looks amazing but I want to be sure my setup would be suitable.

Any advice appreciated. even if it's :shout: YOU POSTED IN THE WRONG FORUM, DUMMY!! :shout:

It should work, unless the Betta is super aggresive, or the platies or mollies have bright colors

one molly is black, one is orange and one is pink.
I don't have any platies yet so I can either not get them or choose blandish fish.

the orange molly is quite bright.
the last thing i want is for any of the fish to be attacked/injured as a result.
When you say 'should work,' what is likely to go wrong?

Well, some bettas are just homocidle, but if he has been with the other fish, it will most likely work, you just don't know what could happen. If the fishe is intimidating then it won't work but short finned mollies will most likely work

I've seen Bettas in with platys & mollies at my Lfs & they seem to get on ok.

Bettas are quite solitary fish. I have had them work in community tanks, but they're personality seems duller when they are in communities. My bettas have more personality when they are in their own tanks. Then they tend to interact with you more when you approach the tank, as opposed to hiding from the other fish and ignoring your. This has been my experience though.

It sounds as though my setup won't be suitable by the time I've put the mollies in.
It's a shame. It's a beautiful fish and I hate to think of it going to someone who hasn't been advised.
Not that I know everything but you people have increased my knowledge about Bettas and made me want to find out more...
Perhaps I'll upgrade my 60l, forget the platties and get the SFF....
I'll have to think about that..

IMHO I think that your tank will be fine with the mollies :good:

Well, thats good to know but I'm going to read and learn more about them before I make my choice.
He's a gorgeous fish and if I can give him and my other fish a good quality of life and he is still in the LFS when I am ready to introduce another fish then I will get him.

Would adding fish after the SFF be ok or would I be better adding the mollies first?

Thanks,

-Paul

I have kept both female and male bettas in with platys and mollies without any problems at all :) My boys were both very placid and neither of them took any notice of the platys (Hi-fin and very brightly coloured) and mollies (Gold Sailfin and dalmatian)
