Shoaling Fish?

are black neon tetras shoaling/schooling fish?

at the moment i have :

3 neon tetras (getting like 7 tomorrow depending on how much they are)
3 black neons
and 3 wagtail platys

Will be purchasing 6 peppered corys tomorrow hopefully, as the lfs near doesn't have any!!! (criminal they're so cute) ......oh yeah and a net lol

I would be worried about adding too many fish at once. If that is your surrent stocking list, you may need to add them in groups of 3 so as to not overburden your filter causing an ammonia spike.

so i should just by three of any at a time and add them? like 3 corys then get 3 more next week? then 3 neons and so on?

yep otherwise your filter wont cope and your ammonia reading will be all over the place

I did a fishless cycle and i thought you could add quite a bit of your stock afterwards according to the guide on here somewhere.

But anyway will wait to add corys next week then

Did you just finish fishless cycling, and is this your initial addition of fish? From what you said above, I thought that there were already existing fish in that tank. If this is infact the initial addition, then you should be fine adding a moderate fish load.

yeh i finished a couple of weeks ago and these are my first lot i got today. So is this a moderate load for my sized tank? or can i add cory tomorrow just like 3?

If its a 28 gallon tank and these are your fish fish after a successful fishless cycle, id add them all, id even be tempted to up the shoals a bit more.

Its not really 28 gallons, its more like 23 with those dimension 36x12x15 but does that matter? like you said it was a successful fish less cycle and it has been cycled at least two weeks. So like you say i am tempted to up my quantities of tetra and corys, but especially tetra so they're happy

Did you continue to add ammonia every day since it had finished? Did you put those other fish in there to keep the cycle going? The reason I ask is that the bacteria need a food source to survive. If you were doing a fishless cycle and stopped adding ammonia when you are finished, the bacteria will die off over the course of the next week. If you put those other fish in there to keep the cycle going, you will have to add fish slowly to avoid an ammonia spike.

yes i continued to add the ammonia even after the cycle was complete up until today when i added fish

Adding 6 corydoras or 10 small tetra at once is not a huge amount more bioload, a cycled filter will be able to cope. Dont overfeed and all should be well.
I have found rummynose tetra Hemigrammus rhodostomus to be excellent schooling fish, very active too. Depending on your filter and current stock I would be tempted to add 15-20

Yep, if you were adding ammonia until now, you want to get the fish on or the bacteria will start to die

okey kokey, so now i have:

3x black neon tetras
9x small neon tetras
6x peppered corys (woop) and
3x platys

Should be enough for bacteria right?

I'm pretty happy with my lot
