Im going to buy a pair of normal cons tomorrow, im getting them from juvy and keeping them in a separate tank, how would I know if theyve paired? How would I know if theyve paird in the store?

Any distinguishing features on a male con, or an albino one?

If you stand and watch them for a few minutes then you will soon find out if there is already a 'pair' in the dealers tank. Their behaviour will be completely different to the others in there. The female may be showing pink on her belly, and the male may have extended fins. He will also be thicker set than the female.

Still wondering why you want a pair of Convicts... HRP's, Sajica, Myrnae, Jade Eyeds, Nanoluteus and Cutteri would all be a better option than normal Cons.

Thanks Minnnt and I always fancied a pair of breeding cons and as I explained in my last post, one of my lfs is in high demand for them and they said they dont really have the time and space to breed them, so I said ill do it and they suggested they'll pay me so I agreed, I dont really care about the money, I just enjoy doing it.
Also my family and friends also want cons so they'll get some too.

By the way - How do you sex keyholes? If I see them in my lfs, their coming home with me :D

The problem with Convicts is they will raise x amount of hundreds every month...

As for Keyholes, i tend to look for fin extensions and general size. It's not an exact science, but usually works for me.

Got the cons, there were no keyholes, The man said these were a male and female pair, they were lip locking in the bag on the way home, do pairs do that?

Heres what they look like, sorry about the noise at the start, my friend was playing about.
Sorry about quality, taken with phone.

Tanks is a bit dirty as I took this before a water change and the water quality looks bad because the phone camera isnt that good.

Well, the Albino is a female and looks like she is ready to lay eggs any second and the black one is a male. The other black one that was swimming about looked to be a male as well.

Hmm thanks, would the albino and normal male pair up, they been staying close to eachother but everynow and again the albino would chase the male.

When will my female con lay the eggs, shes been like that for a month, how long can they hold eggs for?

No, what i mean is that she will lay them when she is paired and ready to do so. She won't just lay them for no reason what so ever. :good:

Oh right, How do I know when they have paired?

Sorry for all of the questions.

No problem.

You will know when they have paired, they will stay very close to one another and will ward off any other fish with vigour. It's usually very obvious. Once you start to notice a change in their behaviour feed them up on bloodworm and hit them with a 25-30% cold water change and they will more than likely lay eggs soon after. The female will develop an orangey patch on her belly and they should both be showing their breeding tubes.

Thanks!

IS there also a way to get them to pair since the female seems to chase Off the male and yesterday the 2 female were jaw locking?
