I bought a Juwel 180 today and inherited 7 Severums with it!
2 Gold severums, 4 green and a a red spotted severum. I've not seen them yet but can't wait to aparantly there is a breeding pair amongst them.

Going to pick them up tomorrow, can't wait to get the tank and the fish home!!! :hyper:

you may already know this but you do know they get pretty #41#### big ? you planning on keeping them?

The minimum size tank for a single severum is 75usg, so the rio 180 is too small long term for even one of them. Depending on species of severum, smallest maxing out around 6-7", largest 12", then you are going to need a 6ft for all of them to live happily and attain their full potential growth, whilst the previous owner may have been happy to keep them in this condition, Im hoping you will upgrade the tank or rehome them for their health and welfare.

Minxfishy is not exagerating. Severums are awesome, awesome fish but a 180 is simply not even big enough for one, long-term.
They need to be rehomed or you need to be planning for a BIG tank (or a combination of the two, of course).

I hate to say but the seller of the tank maybe yanking your chain, I very much doubt there would be a breeding pair in that tank with the others as they dont breed till the get to adulthood, if they are all adults there is a big possibility they are stunted, which can cause health problems. A breeding pair would require more space than what is in the 180 and would attack the others in the tank. You may find you have bought a tankfull of trouble.

Star makes a good point here :(

totally agree with everything star said. the likelyhood of a breeding pair being in their is next to impossible. and if the fish are adults they are going to be severely stunted in such a small tank. personally i wouldnt touch it . if you do get the sevs then you are going to want a 6x2x2 at the very minimum, ideally even bigger than that .

I got the tank home last week, a couple of them look a little worse for wear. As soon as i got them home they all got moved into my Rio 400 there was no way i was going to keep them in the 180 (that tanks for my discus), they seem to have settled in pretty nicely all eating well and pretty active.

I'll get some on as soon as i find the connecting wire for my phone.

I've just had a very nice surprise, two of the severums have laid eggs on the back of a piece of bogwood i can just about see the tips of some of them they're there desperately fanning away at this bogwood! :good:

Am I the only one that is not suprised they can start breeding at 3-4". My blue acaras were only 2" then they first spawned. Also if there are 7 then it is easy for them to pair up. getting a good pair from just 1 M 1F is harder then if you let they pick their mates.

I do agree with the size tank. As they grow you will need to pick your fav and let the others go.

We really need some pics :good:

More surprised that they'd breed if they'd all been kept in such a small tank, not that a pair had formed....

The size of the tank is not what puts fish in the mood. If kept in good conditions with the right temp and ph why can't they spawn in a smaller tank? When it feels right do it haha. People can do it in the front seat of a car when the conditions are right HAHAHA! sorry.

Besides OP said he moved them to a Rio 400 thats what close to 90 gal?
