Ok set up my tank last night finished it about 9.30pm used sand for my substrate washed and washed it till it run clear but my tank still seems cloudy will this settle in more time or will my water stay like this ? btw i used play pit sand

Ok Mr White don't worry.

Sand is a great choice but yes it can cloud up for a while. How long depends on the amount of rinsing you did :shifty: Sometimes a couple of days but it can take a couple of weeks.

It not a problem as it wont interfere with your 'Fishless Cycle'......you are going to do a fishless cycle, aren't you :sly:

Ok thx just need to here that was worried my tank would stay cloudy due to the sand :)

Yep im gonna do i fishless cycle i already have a 60l tank set up where i done fish in cycle so with this one defo :) looking at my tank by the time it settles my fishless cycle will be done lol , i washed the sand through properly for about 30 mins constantly mixing it

While you arwe waiting for the sand to settle - why dont you rig your new filter up to your other tank (turn the flow rate to minimum on the new filter to prevent startling the fish with fast water flow), and give the new filter a headstart at growing new bacteria.

Could save you time in the long run.

Aww, you beat me to it :P Or you could just swap a bit of filter media from your 60l with some of the media from your new set up? :good:

i wish i could but its a built in internal filter :( i have put good Bactria in my new filter to boost it up a little i forgot the name there like lots of little green beads you put them in with your sponges there like 7 quid for 100l treatment

BTW doresy your tanks look amazing very nice

I believe you are referring to bactinettes? Whilst these can be useful and some people have had success with them, they can lead to a nitrIte spike, usually they deal pretty well with ammonia but 3/4 weeks later you get a nitrIte spike, so just be on the look out for that.

If you need help with the fishless cycle on the new tank, be sure to ask, plenty of people here with lots of experience with fishless cycles who will be happy to help you out :)

As for the sand clouding the water, if you can get some filter floss and stuff it in the filter, it will help to clear the fine particles in the water.

bactinettes yep thats the one thanks for the advice will keep a look out for that nitrite spike cheers

i will pick some filter floss up later before my local aquarium closes

thanks to everyone for all advice this is a very helpful forum im glad i joined here

Money saving tip for ya, get some wadding/padding from a craft store or similar, the kind they use to stuff teddies (or similar) instead of paying for the floss from the LFS, much cheaper that way or another way is to buy it in rolls from ebay. As floss needs changing regularly or else it gets full of stuff and no longer works, whereas normal filter sponges/ceramic rings etc, dont need changing until they are basically falling apart (thats not what the manufactueres will tell you but its true) they just need rinsing in old tank water once in a while depending on your fish and mainteance regime.

will do then as LFS are a rip off BTW im using a jewul internal filter ( came with my tank ) are these any good ? i cant really get a external yet think this filter will be any good for the time being

damn i wish i would off bought all my parts separate instead of buying a all in 1 most probably would off been cheaper and got better parts

I run the juwel internal on my 47g with no problems at all, as do a lot of other people, but some find them problematic.

@ minxfishy ill give it a try any advice on the sponges to use as ive read alot off ppl saying to take certain ones out and replace with others so my tanks cycling at the min but im planning to have a community tank with live plants so any advice on the filter setup would be great as im getting confused what to use to many ppl saying diff things

thanks for the help minx

im guessing youve got the new, rekord 800? replace the blue sponge with a 'new' Cirax box (little plastic box with some glass bio-media inside)

ive got 2 of them in a compact H and they work a treat, IMO the nitrate sponges (green) arent worth the money, they are quickly exhausted

To be honest and in my experience only, the only sponge Ive removed is the black carbon sponge, purely because they dont last long as in usefulness, the only reason to run carbon is remove medication if/when you need to medicate the tank, so take out the black sponge and keep it for use if you need to remove meds (will save you buying one). I havent removed the blue sponges to use the box and I dont really know why you would, but each to their own, the green nitrAte sponge as said doesnt really do anything, its suppose to remove nitrAtes from your tank but if it does, I havent noticed any difference and the only reason to remove it would be if your planning a heavily planted tank as the plants will use up the nitrAtes.

As I say its just my opinion/experience with the juwel internals (ive had two, still got one and will have one in new tank next week also).
