well now im stuck with a 25L tank with marine lights, a heater, a skimmer and a powerhead. Hmmm i wonder what these Items can make? I know a desktop seahorse tank! (depending on food) what ever I have in there its going to have to be low maintance so i can concentrate my time and money on my 128L reef. But any way. I wasnt planning to have corals (too much hassle for such a small tank) :p oh yer and this is for my bedroom :fun: on my hw desk! should be revising gcse not looking at ma marine fish!. Due to low maintance i was going to use non-ro water to start with because i have no corals. Is a bit of LR and various macroalgaes and seawead okay with the de-chlorinated water from the tap?

Also the biggest question is can i turn off the powerhead and skimmer at night to stop the noise? both are noisy! I have heard seahorses to be hardy creatures?

I am trying to go with the theme of Kelwoo's tank.

Food will some go for frozen?

can't wait to start

This is the tank so far:

cool idea but sea horses arnt hardy there very hard to keep

i thought it was the feeding, any way its not time really its money lol

will they be ok with powerheads and skimmer off at night?

do i need a powerhead as it doesnt work well and seahorses dont like movement, will the skimmer be enough flow?

On a tank that size you don't really need a skimmer, although its a bonus - so yes by all means turn the skimmer off - but the powerhead, no way, they are not that loud anyway!

so seffie you are saying they will be fine with like 0 flow? that'd be great. instead of using the skimmer ive ordered an internal filter to go in there which will have a sponge to contribute to reducing the bioload. I will also load it with carbon.base rock and sand in there now. will post picks soon!

whoa, I didnt say no flow - I said no skimmer. You need flow for the live rock. However in a tank that size the internal filter might create enough flow, you would have to test it first to see. Also please wait for Kelwoo, she will be able to tell you exactly the best way to keep both the lr and the seahorses.

PM her, although be aware she has just lost her beloved male seahorse, Thunder

aarrr yes i heard :( im so sorry. I am looking to keep dwarf seahorses now. i have found a really good site

http://www.syngnathid.org/articles/dwarfKeeping.html

but instead of 15-25% water change a month I am planning on up to 33% water change every week. (from main tank) i have heard about this before and recycling old water i would have thought be better than tap water. also it may help my algae grow and pick up a few copepods too!

I will plan to use de-capsulated hatched brine mostly to feed them on as It seems most cheap and readily available by hatching the eggs. and they apparently contain 69% protein!

I will continue to run the skimmer now and again until the sponge filter comes, then i will decide what to do. (probably remove it)

added a piece of live rock and some base rock to get seeded. (going to dads factory tomorrow so will get paid) and may buy some more LR to replace the base. and added a tiny lair of sand from main tank.

heres a question: will it cycle if the rock and sand were from my main tank?

I dont think it will start a cycle as long as you move the LR right into the tank without letting it start to have a die off, If you use the same water out of the main tank I think I would put the LR and water in and let it sit for a week or so to be safe, and do some testing I hope it works out for ya,

eh, RO water is as cheap as chips in the amount you are talking about - you don't want to be using the water from your other tank. Change 25% each week and you will be fine

Have you had a look at The findependent - sure BigC had put something in there

do you mean run the filter without the sponge, I hope so

Goodo

If most of the sand is from your other tank and all the rock - then no, it wont cycle - you will have a cloned tank - woo hoo. it's what I did for my five footer. I took some of the sand out and half the rock, had other live rock sitting in my rio 180 already cured. Was then able to move stock over as soon as the tank cleared
