Ha ha not reading earlier posts eh, it was on the first page

I was searching through the 13 pages of the Uk directory and was getting pretty bored spending all that time looking through mainly english stores. So i thought i'd set up a new one just for scottish stores. I will start again as some of the reviews in the UK Directory are a couple of years old now.

I'll set it out the same:

NAME
VARIETY OF STOCK (out of 10) + COMMENTS
QUALITY OF STOCK (out of 10) + COMMENTS
SERVICE PROVIDED (out of 10) + COMMENTS

Deffinitely Pin this!

There arent any description for my toon, Aberdeen, so here goes.

There aren't many shops available in Aberdeen, so we kind of get a raw deal with aquatic stores. And because of the cold winters, the stock is very limited at that time.

Ill give descriptions of other shops once Iv been to them more.

Holburn Tropicals:

Variety: 8/10

Their tropical fish variety has been quite poor on the many occasions I have visited, they have all the standard tropical fish in stock that one would expect. Guppies, swordtails, tetras. They do however have a few lake malawi tanks which offer a variety of mbuna cichlids, which is quite usefull for starting that kind of tank. Their best stock is with their marine section. They have many tanks in another part of the shop dedicated entirely to marines, they have many specimens and a selection of invertibrates and live rock. The plants offered is limited, and equipment is scarce. HOWEVER YOU CAN ORDER ALMOST ANY SPECIES OF FISH FROM THEM AND THEY WILL GET THEM, THAT IS WHY I GAVE IT AND 8

Quality: 8/10

Tanks are generally quite clean, however there are the odd tanks with copious amounts of algae.

Service: 4/10

There is ussually only one woman there, and she is always in such a hurry for you to get a fish that it makes you feel a bit uncomfortable. When you ask for advice she will seem unwilling to explain things, she isnt very helpfull.

If you are in the Aberdeen area and are feeling at a loss because of the lack of shops in the area, you are not alone. Other than Holburn Tropicals I would recommend A1 Aquatics, I have only been there once to buy 4 really healthy clown loaches that I have had for 3 months now. It seems like a really good store and probably one of the best in the ABerdeen area. It is located down by SUnset boulevard (the beach)

holburn tropicals is a horrible shop tanks are full of algae and fish are either diseased or in a bad state, i have been in several times and wouldnt buy a thing from them.!! this is tropical fish cant speak for marine as havent looked.

A1 aquatics are terrible as they lie to everybody about the fish , i have had a lot of people say the same. i got banned for taking a fish back because they told the usual crap and i found out that the fish was not suitable for what i had and it would outgrow my tank. but they didnt belive me and banned me for this the owner called me a bastard etc. horrible staff!!!

Seems I'm off one Saturday and the whole place falls apart .

People should just visit when I'm in! What's described here really disappoints me compared to what I see, sounds like I'll be busy on Saturday -_- .

Yeah. I think you should post your work schedule on the forums so that we know when you'll be there!

Not been in to the AR yet so have nothing to report. I keep getting put off Leith Walk by the bloody traffic.

Sad News - Edinburgh

I was visiting East Lothian Aquatics recently and upon speaking to the owner, Phil, have learned that The Aquatic Rooms in Edinbugh is to close in the near future. The installation of tram lines going on in the city just now is majorly affecting trade and is set to continue until 2011.

All the staff and stock are to be transferred down to East Lothian Aquatics and the store will start to be officially advertised shortly.

The finished shop is to house a large reptile section and a large outdoor pond section.

The shop is coming together now, with the tanks filling up nicely, especially the African Cichlid and Marine sections.

Sad news all round about The Aquatic Rooms, but hopefully it'll only make East Lothian Aquatics even better. :good:

The news of the Aquatic Rooms shutting is in the Evening News tonight. I am well gutted. I feel really guilty now for not having gone in since the beginning of the year. I fully believed in supporting my LFS and bought everthing in the AR - even stuff I could easily get online. My decision not to go in was mainly personal and was exacerbated by the tram roadworks. I thought that since it was a specialist shop that had a good regular customer base that they were the one shop who could perhaps ride out the problems in Leith Walk. Had I thought that lack of custom would put the shop at risk, I'd have laid aside what seems now like a petty incident and remained a loyal customer.

Not everyone can travel to Trannent to pick up a few fish and plants. It's only really going to be worth the journey if you're buying a lot or fancy a day out. Otherwise it'll be the internet or Pets at Home for food/treatments and I haven't a clue where I'll buy fish. With petrol being the price it is now, it's going to add a fair bit to the cost of the hobby. I can see me running down my tanks to be honest. They've been suffering a bit since I stopped frequenting the AR as I bought a fish elsewhere that decimated the big coldwater tank and I've not seen decent fish elsewhere in the City.

If you read this Phil, I am sorry to hear this news. The AR has been there as long as I can remember. I can understand your decision to close the shop but I wish you'd look elsewhere in the City. There really isn't another shop that comes close to providing the quality of stock and advice that you guys do. Although I loved sitting in the tropical room, especially in the winter, the premises weren't ideal and were a bit sprawly and run down. Maybe a move to a nice warehouse setup somewhere like Bonnington where there is ample parking and a bus route nearby??? Purlease??

Tell Skye, David, Craig and co that we're all really sorry and wish them well.

sucks huh. Not helped by the whinging assholes on the forums. Nothing better to do with their time than mock people's misery.

Hi guys, thanks for ur kind comments, The article in the een was driven more by cliff than me. I did the interview over hands free while driving to Tranent. I have only one gripe, "are the trams a priority"!

I totally agree with nossie i was planning to give Ar a totaL refit but resisted i wasnt sure how bad things with the roadworks would get. Now im glad i didnt, no amount of money would make Ar work with the current road problems.

I now intend to put all my efforts into driving the new store to the highest levels in Aquatic Keeping

Thanks Phil

I'm disgusted by some of the comments and have been defending the shop and your employees. I honestly can't believe the mentality of some of the posters but you see the same names cropping up time and time again flaming in all the articles so don't take it personally. I have no opinion on the trams either way as I'm lucky enough to live/work in a compact area but the length of time they've spent digging up then filling in then re-digging up LW is a joke and I find it disgusting that it is deemed acceptable to jeopardise someones livlihood supposedly "for the greater good" when there seems to be little in the way of minimising the risk to businesses. Ok rant over!

Personally Phil I would love to see a new improved AR in Edinburgh. You had so little in the way of competition and you only need look through this forum to see that. A superstore in Trannent may be great for a day out but nothing beats the handiness of being able to drop in on the way home to pick up a few bits and pieces or get that medication whilst it's still got a chance to work. Maybe keep the tanks for the big store (or be able to order them for delivery at the wee shop) but keep food/meds, plants and fish in a scaled down City version? Afterall, if I'm only wanting to pick up a few tetras and a couple of plants I'm unlikely to want to travel 40 mins to Trannent to do so.

I'm looking forward to coming down and seeing the new shop anyway. As long as there is coffee!

Clearing out the cupboard the other evening and found an envelope with a gift reciept for the Aquatic Rooms in it - my daughter got it for her Xmas and we haven't used it :(
What's the chances of the new shop accepting it do ya reckon?

PS Anyone seen any Flame Tetras on their travels? We had a wee shoal but are down to one wee solitary loner and he looks miserable :(
